Hot water heater for the shop - exploring options

If you are the only one who will be using it, a small one that has a long recovery time is all that is really needed.

Any concerns with finishing drywall and painting garage in a unheated garage in a colder climate

don't mud or paint in an unheated space when it is near freezing. The water in the mud and paint need time to do their thing before they get that cold. If a room was done during the warmer part of the year, and one is seeing cracks in winter, one might suspect something is moving.

    Residential Air Handler help (freezing)

not a clue. The condensate drain is just there to catch water as the condensation drips off the coil. The coil is not supposed to get below freezing when the airflow and the refrigerant charge are correct. To my ears, this conversation is sort of like saying the fish aren't biting because the...

Black and decker weed eater finally died, what should I get next?

I think the one with the metal head has a better selection of parts. The plastic head on only has the cover and spool available. I hit a small post once with the original one I purchased when it was about a week old. The line wrapped around the metal post and damaged the head. I was going to...

Black and decker weed eater finally died, what should I get next?

I have a Toro cordless. The plastic head cannot be rebuilt if it breaks or is damaged. Been there. Lowe's sells the same one under the Kobalt name too only it is blue. Toro also makes a one with a metal head that can be rebuilt.

Anyone here keep there air compressor outside next to the garage?

no. They are in the outdoor shed. If air is needed in the garage I drag the hose 10'. I can't imagine letting any of my assets like that sit in the weather. It is hard enough keeping things clean and from rust.

Where would you put the hoist?

define "Hoist." It can mean a two post floor lift, a fixed single spot overhead hoist, one that runs along a beam, or one that has movement all over the shop as in a huge crane. Which of these is it, or in between?

    Structural bolts

yes, that is the one. I recalled some drawings at the time where softer washers allowed the nuts to deform and crack the beams. The original design had used higher grade fittings, and someone changed it. I was only 30 ish back then, I am 75 now. I put in a whole house fan here years ago where...

    Residential Air Handler help (freezing)

if you installed a factory type 4" or 5" filter housing when the unit was put in you can use a 4" filter. If your system was designed for a 1" filter use the fiberglass filters. Make sure all the vents in the house are open. If you have lost refrigerant, it can be anything. A leaky coil, a...

    Structural bolts

last time I had a project like that, the engineer spec'd what fasteners I should use. Did your engineer spec specific fasteners, or did they leave it up to you to pick them then run your solutions past them? Inspectors have been known to look for a specific fastener. There was a landing many...

Adding wall insulation to existing walls - Cold Climate

the issue happens all the time on this forum. Doesn't even cross the mind of people who live in lower humidity places and have pole barns. There are hundreds of posts on it. If at any point equipment with mass, like say a lathe, is cooler than the dew point, it will sweat. Better insulation...

    Residential Air Handler help (freezing)

pan problems and freezing are two issues. 1. Make sure the pan drains and does not leak. Lots of things from algae to dirt and bugs can plug it as others have said. AC units always shed water 2. Check the filter and coil. Make sure both are clean. Lack of air flow can cause freezing, Check the...

    Pioneer vs Mitsubishi

re the quote. In 2004 I replaced the HVAC system here. Four bids. Three from well known companies in this area, and one from a HVAC company I knew. The difference in price was 2 - 3X as much on the three I did not know. When they kept calling me wanting the job, and they found out they lost out...

Adding wall insulation to existing walls - Cold Climate

also be aware that too much insulation may allow too cool a temperature late night and early morning in summer when it is humid if you get a lot of air movement in and out in summer to where you cannot dry the air out with the AC.
