    PC/Tool Backpack

I recently had an employer change, and the Everki I suggested previously would not work for carrying and organizing tools (which I mentioned), even though it was absolutely great for carrying enough tech bits for a mobile office. I pretty much went through the exact same things mentioned in...

Thinking about buying an AC recovery machine

It was at 2 former employers. Can't imagine it would have went well, nor did I have proof (before phones with cameras). But it happened, and I know that it happens. At the recent former employer, the pipefitter superintendent told a fitter to cut the refrigerant lines on a pool pack unit...

Thinking about buying an AC recovery machine

I know of at least one residential HVAC company that would vent the refrigerant charge on a system replacement because reclaiming it "took too long". Most that I knew of did not use a vacuum pump, but rather "purged" the lineset with the refrigerant in the new equipment. And if I know of one...

Hard Start vs Soft Start-Help me understand better?

The better "521" hard start kits have a potential relay, and back EMF generates a voltage that pulls the hard start capacitor out of the circuit when the compressor spins fast enough.

Pressure Washer Pump Protector - Anyone Use It?

Yes. I use RV antifreeze, pumped in with a drill operated pump. Just pulling the cord or turning the bottle upside down won't clear the water from the pressure washer plumbing on mine. I don't use the pressure washer often, so it gets the treatment after each use. Have read that drying water...

    Residential Air Handler help (freezing)

That's an understatement. There have been plenty of manufacturing changes, so a direct comparison isn't really possible, but I wouldn't be too far out of line to say that the prices have nearly doubled when compared to the before times. It doesn't get any less expensive to wait.

Hard Start vs Soft Start-Help me understand better?

A soft start will significantly reduce the startup current of the compressor. It also eliminated the remaining light flicker when the unit turned on for my system. A good part of the light flicker was eliminated with a smart contactor. And yes, a soft start kit is considerably more money than...

    Residential Air Handler help (freezing)

It's because 410A is a blend, and the parts don't leak out equally.

    Residential Air Handler help (freezing)

If the system is leaking, the reclaimed 410A should not be used.

Shears / snips for cutting "tough" plastic sheets

I've cut plenty of relatively thin plastic (~1/16") with offset aviation snips, a unishear or double cuts. Thin like FRP sheet for walls or ceiling light diffusers. It really depends on how thick the material is, and what type. Some lighting diffuser material will make little cracks at the cut...

    Residential Air Handler help (freezing)

This is the part where warranties are worthless. Probably need to start at the Rheem website and find local dealers. Then you need to call them and ask about diagnostics and repairs or replacement on your equipment. Generally speaking, a contractor doesn't want to warranty stuff installed by...

    Residential Air Handler help (freezing)

The cap wouldn't have much of anything to do with freezing. Just not draining properly. The coil freezing is another problem.

    Hydronic/Boiler System Turn Down ??

This makes zero sense. The water heater is the boiler in this instance, and the tank burner will cycle on and off as needed. As far as "code" is concerned, AFAIK, a water heater has never been classified as a boiler, at least as far as the residential style domestic water heater is concerned...

    Welding Helmet Recommendations

I didn't get the light, but will agree on the Viking headgear being very good and thoroughly adjustable. Wasn't enough to keep it, though.

    Welding Helmet Recommendations

There have been mentions of the Lincoln Viking hood. I had one. There is a significant weight difference between a Miller Digital Elite and a Miller Digital Infinity and the Lincoln Viking (the Viking is the heaviest of these three, and I have owned all 3). The Digital Infinity is still heavy...
