Guidance for DIYer purchasing tools in Canada

Hello and welcome fellow Canadian! You don't list your location, so I can't provide any specific stores to you other than the ubiquitous Canadian Tire or Princess Auto. I'm just a home gamer and not a pro, but I do work on a wide variety of cars/trucks/engines/tractors as projects or general...

Should I upgrade my wire stripper tool ?

Same here, before the rest of you do and the price is automagically adjusted (skyrockets) on that jungle site. The current price in CAD is $36, similar to a decent pair of conventional Klein or Channellocks, of which I already have. These will be my first pair of auto strippers. Cheers!

    Inexpensive pump to transfer oil

I went through something similar last year when I removed my oil furnace and still had 600L of fairly fresh oil in the tank. I looked at buying a transfer pump and barrels and trying to save it to use in tractors or other stuff. Then I realized that I don't run a farm or have a huge need for...

    Church Build

Thanks for the updates! What an amazing journey for this old building. I hope it serves you well while you are out east. Next time I'm out that way, I will have to do a driveby. Good luck with your continued work and your move! All the best in 2024.

    Finding Conduit sandwiched between flooring?

Pin locator like the one linked below (no affiliation, just a good example). I use these to locate buried culverts and iron survey pins all the time. Sweeping across the floor you will very quickly locate the position of any steel/iron. If you sweep in a grid pattern, you should be able to...

    Canada Only Deals!

I recently put through a PAuto order (save $20 on shipping with orders over $99) and included a few of these T27 Torx screwdrivers. They also have a few other sizes. I've been looking for T27 locally with no luck as it seems to be an oddball size. Unless you have a bunch of Stihl chainsaws...

Can someone help me identify a lathe from a bad photo?

Standard Modern "Utililathe". Made in Canada and these were once common in high school shops. My first experience* with a lathe was in Gr. 9 metal shop with one of these. *I'm not a machinist - just a hack amateur with virtually no lathe experience and a clapped out SB9 C in my shop.

The Deep Creek Tool Museum near Enderby, BC

Cool! Thanks for sharing this. I was just in Enderby 2 weeks ago and had no idea. I'm only a few hours away and pass by fairly often - going to check it out next time!

    Canada Only Deals!

Hah! I took it out of the box, tested some batteries (they were dead lol) and promptly put it in my toolbox drawer. Haven't touched it since! When I do finally get around to using it for something meaningful, I will try to remember to share my experiences!

Whatcha doing in Golden? I live there btw - grab a brew at Whitetooth Brewery. I'll join ya! Kamloops has both KMS and Princess Auto. Both right off the highway and not busy and crowded like those down near Vancouver. I'm in Kamloops a lot and I hate crowds so it suits me better. If you...

    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT A new lease on life: 30x40 schoolhouse conversion

Man that ***** that the owner was present/participated in this work. I hope they were at least the lowest bidder or cheap. Don't bother having them back, it can't get any better. Unfinished basement or not, that's a terrible idea to draw combustion air from inside the house with no makeup...

    “Cheater Bars” Discussion

Yeah sometimes you do what you gotta do. Many years ago I was at the Pick and Pull and spotted a new looking set of rear leaf springs on a 3/4 ton truck. All I had was a basic socket set and my trusty Princess Auto 1/2" drive flex handled ratchet. Well, the U-bolt nuts were tight as frig and...

    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT A new lease on life: 30x40 schoolhouse conversion

That's some terribly sloppy work completed by someone who clearly doesn't give AF about the work they do. I would have no hesitation in calling up the company and making my disappointment well known (in a polite but firm manner). Give them a chance to respond, then take further action if required.

How should we sink our steel beams in concrete for retaining wall ?

Man, I still don't understand what you think you are gaining by filling the entire hole with concrete? This isn't a load carrying piling in the normal sense where you have significant vertical loading and you need the concrete to transfer a vertical load to the surrounding soil (skin...

How should we sink our steel beams in concrete for retaining wall ?

Why do you feel the need to have the H piles totally encased in concrete? There are thousands (millions?) of bridge abutments and pilings throughout the world that are constructed using driven H piles or steel pipe piles directly into the ground. They are bare steel, no coatings. If there is...

    Between 485 & 705 SQ/FT Tom's Neighborhood Workshop

Nice to see you back! I hear you on the Toyota transmission BS. My 08' 4Runner has the same setup, probably the same transmission. Check the fluid when hot, in gear with the park brake set/wheels chocked, crawl underneath and crack the overflow bolt. If the transmission gets too hot, stop...

Raise entire side door shop - what’s involved?

I think I would agree with some of the previous comments. You really should consider your options for cutting out the asphalt and regrading if possible. Regrading to even a 0.5% slope would help keep water away from the door. Even better if you can lower the overall elevation of the paved...

    Found Tools

Many years ago I was doing some work at a natural gas plant. We were draining some flocculation/agitation tanks for rehab and after one was drained, lo and behold a nice Pelican explosion proof/waterproof light was unearthed at the bottom. The plant operations guys said the initials on the...

Yeah, I'd be interested in some feedback on this as well. I recently found a need for a clamp type DC ammeter and bought a Uni T 210E (haven't received it yet) but may have got this one instead since the clamp is separate and it's easier to read the display when it's not jammed up under a dash...
