Project Flintstone - '87 Olds Cutlass Rebuild

Wow, hats off to you and your committment! I came home from the hospital in my mom's 1981 Olds Cutlass Supreme "Brougham" (Bro!). It was our family car until we replaced it with a minivan in 1991. 305 V8, sunroof and no AC. No idea what my parents thought with the no AC part. We suffered...

Above 1200 Sq/FT From Urban Pie Factory To Mountain Barn

"Hello sir, what vehicle will you be towing?". "Umm, a 2003 Ford Focus...." 😀 Nothing like towing a 7000lb van with another 7000lb van using an underrated tow dolly with surge brakes lol! Cali to Idaho no less 😂. Glad to see this thread updated. What an awesome place!

What would you put today in a hand-assembled roadside tool kit for a truck or car?

Wow, those are excellent stats! But not reflected by everyone's experience, even driving newish, well maintained vehicles. Of course, the newer they get, the more difficult the fixes get and the less likely to be conducted on the side of the road.

I don't need these but they are on sale so... Dang it!

What would you put today in a hand-assembled roadside tool kit for a truck or car?

I think there is a middle ground between the "AAA Membership and a CC" and packing around a full compliment of tools and spares. It depends very much on your abilities, the vehicle in question and where you are situated/travelling. If you have the luxury of a late model vehicle (5 years old...

    Grading a 2 acre lot?

Yes, good points. Incorrect installation without consideration for the local aquifer or groundwater conditions could result in contamination issues. In my case, it is not a concern but it could very well be a problem where the OP is situated.

    Grading a 2 acre lot?

I haven't followed your other threads. But if you have a table flat piece of property and drainage issues, you may have to look into other ways to convey surface water that are not based primarily on surface grading. For example, my property (smaller than yours) is quite flat. I've got...

    The New Yankee Worksop

I have fond memories of watching both New Yankee Workshop and This Old House with my dad on weekend mornings when I was a kid, for the short period when we had cable TV. Early 90's. "Biscuit Joinah" and "Porta Cable" lol. I found the accents funny. Thanks for the flashback! I think I...

Safe to rip 1/4” from 2x4s? Any tips?

I would have absolutely no qualms running a 60" 2x4 through my table saw (old contractor Rockwell Beaver 10") and ripping off 1/4". I do this all the time? 5 minute job, no screwing around notching anything. Go slow, use a run out table and some push sticks?

Good place for online tool purchases in Canada

Both the Home Depot (Canada) and Staples Office Supplies (of all places?) carry Gray Tools. Not sure if their prices are any different than buying direct from Gray Tools website, but HD.ca often has free shipping deals. I'd really like to find a supplier for Proto that isn't Acklands...

Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT From losing everything to being cash-poor and shop-rich in "only" five years!

Awesome score on the metal and plastic haul! Depending on the type of plastic, perhaps you could sell it as blanks for knife making handles?

Plumbing Project - Re-Pipe the House

Excellent work! I've got a 1960's ranch with an unfinished basement so I've got similar access as you have. My house was replumbed sometime in the 90's with Poly B so I'm looking at a full replumb in the near future as some of my fittings are showing signs of weeping. It also appears that the...

    Old New Departure Bearings

Excellent - another good resource to reach out to with an inquiry for obsolete bearings. Hope they can locate some NOS sitting on a shelf somewhere.

    Old New Departure Bearings

This talk of bearings got me out in the shop to check since that number quoted by the OP sounded familiar. Indeed, my spindle bearings are also ND C87115. And the modern replacement is an NTN 6202LLU/15.875. Shown in photos below. This is a special 6202 series bearing with a non standard...

    Framing back of fireplace ideas.

I don't know the codes in the US. In Canada you are required to have 2"/50mm clearance between framing and a chimney, irrespective of the use of an internal SS liner. I recently had a WETT inspection on a 1960's home and had to alter the floor joists and framing adjacent to my masonry chimney...

    Old New Departure Bearings

Thank you for this! I've got a 14" Duro Drill Press from 1937 that has the New Departure spindle bearings that are NLA. I have to go and check, but they may be the same as the ones used by Delta and the spindle design is very similar. I will have to check with them and see if their spindle...

Dang it! I just ordered a bunch of stuff from P-Auto to get the free shipping deal. If I'd known these hammers were on clearance I would have certainly added one to the order. Timing - mine *****! I've handled the OSCA offerings when at the store and liked them, they just never seem to be on...
