    Old 1880 Barn Shop Conundrum

I, too, would be inclined to put up a dedicated shop building. I think with that style barn, you could easily come up with something that would complement, not clash or compete with the barn. I'd turn that space into a fair-weather man cave. Barn dance, anyone?

Recommend me a central vac for the garage?

^^^ I liked the allegro specs and reviews...that's what I picked for my new house....not installed yet. Thinking about one for the shop, too, mostly for vac'ing out cars, RV, etc

Anyone ever have the power company evaluation?

Actually, it's the other way around. Power companies want you to conserve energy so they make more money. Power generation facilities are expensive to build, and take years to get to production stage. Enviro-mentalists fight coal and nuclear. The last two nuclear plants built in the US...

Blocking in the wall for cabinets and toughening sheetrock.

We are building a new house now. I went in a couple of weeks ago, and put up blocking everywhere I thought I'd want it. Did it on our current house when we built 15 years ago, and it has paid off. Blocking in for towel bars, robe hooks, shower curtain rods, curtain rods at every window, grab...

Anchoring a partition wall -- tapcon, ramset, or ??

I am using steel framing for my interior partitions. Was planning to use Ramset pins to fasten the track down to the concrete. BUT....as it turns out, two of my partitions (40' total of wall) will lay right on top of saw cuts in the slab. One will have the saw cut dead center under the...

Pour in the morning, pouring in the evening (Rain)

Had a couple of strong summer storms the afternoon mine was poured. Pour at 8am, rain was about 3-6pm. Came out fine. Not covered. Saw cut it as soon as the rain stopped. Rain within a couple or three hours I'd worry about it. Longer, it'll be fine.

    add floor joist insulation ?

Sealed, open, or conditioned crawlspace. If sealed, really no difference. Look up the "princeville nc field study" on crawls. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

    Lighting Help....

OK, I've read many, many threads here on lighting. Even tried the lithonia tool (with limited results). My shop is a 42x60 (jpeg plan attached with relevant notes). Two areas are partitioned off, 17x38 or so for motorhome parking, and a 20x20 welding/hot work room. Of the remainder, one...

    Pouring garage floor tomorrow

Mine was 5-6", 6x6 wmm in field, perimeter (monoslab) with rebar. Each column base (8) was dug out about 4'x4' and 2 feet deeper, had a 'cage' of rebar bend up and tied into footing rebar. 4000psi. This was a 42xx60. Depending on your uses, building size, and if you are going to put in a...

    Trenching in brownstone

Can't find anyone with a rock wheel around here. Did see an old one on CL about 3 hours away, but somebody beat me to it. Seem to be more popular out west Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

    Storing tools for multiple professions

A lot of my work is offsite, so I have most stuff packed up in boxes. Two of these: http://www.homedepot.com/p/RIDGID-22-in-Pro-Tool-Box-Black-222570/205440481 One holds my nail bags and a few misc items such as extra hammer, pry bars, etc. The other holds all the misc stuff that you...

    Trenching in brownstone

This is run from service entrance to my shop. Power company says best way is to either go under it, or around it. On the power feed to the house, said they'll start with a backhoe, if that doesn't work, then directional drill. I have gotten quotes of 12-15 bucks a foot for drilling. Double...

    Trenching in brownstone

I gotta get power and water 400' to my new shop. Power line by code needs to get 18" below grade, so I need to dig out to 22" or thereabouts. Problem I've found thru a couple of test digs with the backhoe is a layer of brownstone, mostly about 16-18" down (below mixed clay), but in at least...

    New 40x60 shop in NC

Lee County here. My shop I just built we had to do some cut and fill. One corner cut down about 3 or 4', opposite corner (diagonally) had to fill about 2'. Grading contractor ran over it A LOT with vibrating sheepsfoot roller. Did just a few inches each lift, compacted, then repeat. After a...

    New metal garage plan

Conduit can be a pain to work with, but after about 5 bends you have it (mostly) figured out. Simple enough....you'll mostly be doing 90* bends at corners/ceiling, and offsets for boxes. I am fixing to wire my new shop, all surface mount in emt...looking about 650-700' total by the time it's...

    The wet garage raise

I like it, and would probably do it myself, except the concrete block cribbing part. Get some 6x6's and cut them to cribbing length. I'd trust that more than a block. And x2 on plenty of diagonal bracing, in all directions.

Are fart fan duct work hard piped or can it be drier ductwork?

We are currently in a build. FF's are vented to soffit with insulated flex duct, same stuff they use connecting the floor heat vents to the main trunk. The Hvac guy did those fan ducts also. Stuff like this...
