Ding filling in woodwork before painting

I also use 2 part epoxy putty for deep damage like after I dig out rotted areas. For inside work on dinged up trim, I use the red Bondo scratch filler. It sands like a dream. But it does take one or 2 coats of primer prior to the finish 2 coats. My latest job was to repair and refinish a door...

    Do you use vintage tools?

Here on GJ it seems easy to get rid of tools that you no longer want to have clogging up your tool box drawers and other storage spaces. For example, I recently obtained a very nice vintage quick release clamp on vise. It was larger than most of my others on the display rack so I cleared out...

I would have thought that he could afford to just buy a nice Palmgren or Heinrich. 😎

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Wow! I’ve seen damaged drill press vises before but WTF happened to that poor victim? 😖 (I will say that the outdoor faucet wheel is a clever addition) 😎

2026 Garage Sale Thread (15th Annual)

Wow... I needed one of those a few months ago and had to pay fifty bucks for a new one at Home Depot. 😖

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Interesting painting tool. Do you use the syringe to flow in the cream colored paint right up to the lettering that is red from the “all over” main paint job? Or what?

Great for that and also if you need to work above a staircase.

Replace Two Step Ladders for Fold Up

I have a conventional 6 foot fiberglass step ladder. I also have a 3 step step stool kept in the kitchen and used to access upper cabinets. (Upper cabinets run all the way to the 8 foot ceiling) My heavy old Little Giant makes up into a 9 foot A-frame ladder when both halves are fully extended...

Replace Two Step Ladders for Fold Up

Mine is a Little Giant. Heavy?, of course. It can’t be beat for working above staircases. Also, once it’s set up, the weight and the stiffness when you are on level surfaces gives you a lot of confidence when you are up in the air. Do you know anyone who has been seriously injured or killed by...

    Reed Vice

I have one or two older Reed vises with cast in jaw inserts. They are VERY hard metal that should stand up to many years of hard use. Let’s wait for someone who uses an old Reed for really hard daily work to comment further. Reed made one or two models of less than top shelf vises but as a...

Sprinkler System Backflow From Elevation Change

Your wooden box looks nice. Just build a skinnier one to cover the piping and the vacuum breaker. If you don’t build a box or at least paint the pipe, the PVC pipe will be exposed to sunlight UV that will badly degrade the plastic and make it quite brittle.

    Deck Resurfacing

When I tore off the old redwood 2x6s, I installed new framing with 12 inch centers to better support the new Moisture Shield synthetic deck boards. A neighbor installed Trex over 24 inch spaced joists and it looks like a roller coaster. 😱 here is what Google told me about Trex… Pro-Tips for...

Sprinkler System Backflow From Elevation Change

The instructions for anti siphon valves say to install at least 6 inches ABOVE the highest sprinkler head. So to prevent water from back flowing onto your patio, you an either raise the anti siphon valve or install an electric valve and a dual check valve assembly to replace your anti syphon...

Can’t help myself sometimes, bought a floor jack at an estate sale

That’s a very informative 15 page read with great pics. Once rsanter gets his Walker up and running it should not need any more service for the rest of his life. Those old jacks are built like tanks.

Can’t help myself sometimes, bought a floor jack at an estate sale

In case that pic was too small for you to read the label, here it is. Walker was a top notch jack made in USA Professional grade seen in lots of serious shops back in the day. Certainly worth rebuilding.

    Yesterday's find at scrap yard

He might have a buddy with whom he has an agreement to funnel all the vises, etc. to him. Otherwise, I would think that if the guy has a business that is based on selling stuff for more than he paid for it, that the vises etc. would be for sale. Certainly not at the scrap price of so much per...

    Yesterday's find at scrap yard

I doubt that it is anything but threaded into the base. I have a through the bench mount vise on display so to make it fit on the shelf, I just drilled a hole in the shelf. If you feel the urge to remove the rod, I would be super careful about possible damage. To me, I felt it better to drill a...
