Puget Dude’s creations and fabrications (Random project thread.)

If your do it again, pipe rollers and air bag shims are amazingly capable, if used with a little creativity and some blocking.

Puget Dude’s creations and fabrications (Random project thread.)

One summer I was visiting my grandparents, and was fishing at the pond down the hill from their house with my cousins. We heard a car come up the gravel drive to the house, a scream, and five gunshots. There wasn't more screaming, so we went up to see what was happening, and found out the...

New set of Allen Keys needed

Most of the craftsman hex wrenches were supplied by eklind. I still have the ones that came in a bag, and never use them because the ones in holders are easier to find the size.

    Master Force India

Masterforce mechanics tools have been made by apex/gearwrench for a long time. Used to be USA made armstrong stuff, now it's imported from where ever Apex thinks is best. It's basically the same as all the other brands selling the exact same apex-sourced stuff. They're good about warranty...

    Self tapping southwire ground screws

code requires two threads in contact, and requires boxes to be at least 1/16" thick, so 32 tpi screws meet the requirement

    MWBC for shop machines?

About conduit derating, it's based on the number of current carrying conductors. For a normal 120V circuit, there are two current carrying conductors, the hot and the neutral. For a 240V circuit, there are also two current carrying conductors, the two hots. A MWBC is really a 240 circuit with...

    Dustless Drywall Sander

This guy did some repair in the office, fixing an office that was banged up. Replaced sheet or two, holes, and redid a previous repair he thought was ugly. Did everything with durabond 20 with a hawk, trowel and a couple knives. You could tell where he had worked after it was painted, because...

    Dustless Drywall Sander

Drywall guy we hired a few years ago said the difference between a good and a great mudder was the better you were , the less you put on, and the less you had to sand off.

Quantity of outlets for 20x20 shop

15A receptacles are built to the same electrical and mechanical standards as 20A ones, 20A just get the extra T on the neutral. Spec grade 15A and 20A receptacle from the same manufacture are likely identical internally (often including the contacts for the 20A plug.) Remember, a 15A receptacle...

    How to test this?

Just change the oil every job. If you're a DIYer, you're not doing enough work for the cost of oil to be an issue.

Quantity of outlets for 20x20 shop

this is the key thing for me. Having extra outlets also means when you rearrange the shop, if you decide that a shelving stack needs to go right in front of receptacles, it's not a big deal, because there are others. If you know what the layout is going to be, put receptacles in for fixed...

    stains

I recently replaced a kohler toilet of similar vintage because the tank was leaking. I didn’t see any cracks, it just seemed to be porous. I also didn’t spend any time trying to figure it out, because I hated the thing….

Wiring a switch-How best to run my romex?

not grounding the box is a much bigger problem than not grounding the device. self grounding devices are allowed in exposed metal boxes, if the covers have recessed corners, the box is properly bonded, and the device is attached to the cover with locking nuts. Nothing wrong with putting the...

How to upgrade Federal Pacific sub panel and add 240 outlet

The estate I bought my bandsaw from was like that, there was a shelf full of spray cans, all upside down with dates (all 20-50 years old,but someone might have already bought the new stuff) and what they'd been used on. Heating pipes had arrows and rooms written on them. the inside cover of...

A/C Condenser fan has difficulty starting

370V is very close to max voltage a capacitor should see in normal service -- 240V is the RMS voltage, so the peak voltage is ~340V, and class B overvoltage of 8% pushes that to ~367. Increasing the voltage rating of the cap will almost certainly improve its lifespan.

Insanely bad customer service experience from Matco

The law that protects consumers from credit card fraud allows the customer to sue the bank in state court in place of the merchant, and since no one wants that, the chargeback process is what is used. The op appears to live in Illinois, which has a good statutory implied warranty of...
