Fall 2025 - My friend wants a fine tooth ratchet

Not enough votes for a GW 90T locking flex ratchet. I own Koken, Snapon, Nepros, Facom, Hazet, Stahlwille, Mac, etc ratchets and I still, more often than not, use the GW 90T in most scenarios because of the flexibility and locking head is useful. It is also a fraction of the cost of my other...

    Tool Shopping in Switzerland 🇨🇭

As far as the tool market in Switzerland, it is influenced by the culture and language of where you are located. Switzerland is a country with 4 official languages and therefore, cultures. In the Germanic region, you will see more German tool brands. In the French speaking region, you will...

Simple solution- Just move to Switzerland and problem solved. Between the two stores, I prefer Bauhaus, but both are greatly superior to HD / Lowe’s.

    The Facom Tools Thread.

I have old Facom catalogues dating to the 50s so will have to look. I felt bad seeing it by itself and paid rude bux for it - 3 Francs! It’s quite thin, and I thought this and its useful size, may pay off one day! There isn’t much here in Switzerland unless you want PB Swiss and stuff like...

Especially because the staff are well trained, eager to help you, and proud of the store. I use Lowe’s now in the U.S. The dim lighting in Home Depot / Home Dump already makes it feel depressed when walking in.

    Tool Shopping in Switzerland 🇨🇭

My toolbox will be the least of my worries with all of the Swiss and French wine I am taking! In reality, I am leaving most of the tools in Switzerland to use. Only bringing a few of them to the U.S. that are unique.

    Tools from the old world

First time I see Wiha use Poland for manufacturing. Poland has made huge investment in manufacturing capability, so not a bad thing. Just a change to pay attention to.

Why is this Wiha compact 1/4 socket set so expensive?

Describe what you mean by “purdy” / “pretty” stuff? The small precision bit sets are nicely made. But their standard screwdrivers I do not think are nicer than Vessel. And the wrenches are inferior to the big 3 German wrench companies- Stahlwille, Hazet, Gedore in my opinion.

Why is this Wiha compact 1/4 socket set so expensive?

I think Wiha really markets the lights out of “Made in Germany”, especially in the U.S. market. While I own and like the tools, there is nothing they make that has me really impressed. I prefer the Vessel precision screwdrivers today. A decade ago, I was using Wiha for this. If you want the...

BETA Tools in action, 15,766 FT 🆙 in the French Alps, on Mont Blanc 🗻

I disagree with you. Beta really stood out in the 70s and 80s era. I do not fault them for moving towards Asia. A company needs to survive and the giant population growth and vast industrialization are the reason for the pivot towards this market.

At least as far as feel, the SuperLube silicone I think is the superior choice if given the option. I have tried all sorts of synthetic oils and ATFs and gun oils and I get the best “feel” with the silicone SuperLube product. I think Snap-On was on to something when they began to recommend using it.

This happened to me. See above post. The factory grease used was a white lithium type paste that seems to thicken / harden with time.
