Popping 3x3 sandstone 'pavers' out of a mortar bed

Thanks all...but with a normal bear claw on one corner and a breaker bar on the other, we were able to pop a piece in less than 30 seconds. I think as long as we have those, plus a skid steer, we're gonna be just fine (tho I'm dying to buy 2 burke bars, just because :))

Popping 3x3 sandstone 'pavers' out of a mortar bed

The landscaper and I walked the job this morning. At least a couple that we popped up are only adhered to the Sandstone bed with a dab of construction adhesive. So freaking lucky. So the plan is we'll do the job in 2 phases. 1. pop the lower section of the patio, Use his skidsteer to palletize...

Popping 3x3 sandstone 'pavers' out of a mortar bed

Oddly enough, it's sitting on a mortar bed, but I could not see any mortar between the stones. But the joints are tight, maybe 1/2 inch. That being said, once we remove the edging and the first interior piece (most of which are not the full sized pieces I want) we should have a full 36" edge to...

Popping 3x3 sandstone 'pavers' out of a mortar bed

PS....Mods, feel free to tow to the general forum if that's the best place for this thread. Thx

Popping 3x3 sandstone 'pavers' out of a mortar bed

The one was already slightly loose, I just wedged it up. Whole patio needs to be removed before Thanksgiving. Good news is that since I basically purchased all the whole pieces, the person running the estate sale said I can take almost all of the sandstone I want (all of the edging and all of...

Popping 3x3 sandstone 'pavers' out of a mortar bed

I've been working with my landscaper to plan for an approx. 450 sq foot patio. The original plan was to use new TN crabapple sandstone (over a stone base). I happened upon an estate/salvage sale today and was able to scoop up over 600 square feet of 3'x 3' (yes feet) sandstone 'pavers' for a...

    The tipping point....rebuild or replace

Absolutely, one of the reasons for the higher price is that we included some $$$ for deck replacement. I'd say 75% of the decking is in excellent shape (either the original 100 yo 2x8s or replacements, neither of which have water staining)...but if I'm doing it once, I'm doing it right. Rip off...

    The tipping point....rebuild or replace

EDIT: Spoke to the building dept. Actually, since the garage is masonry, it's fireproof and conforming. If I want to rebuild on the same spot, and to maintain conformity, it's gotta be masonry or fire rated (any part that's within 3 feet of the property line, which would be 3 of the 4...

    The tipping point....rebuild or replace

Wait, is your first paragraph applicable if one simply replaces on the same footprint...or if I have to move the structure (if it's the latter, I agree). The garage actually is a double walled structure. From the inside, the bricks that make up the interior walls are ~4x8. The outside, they are...

    The tipping point....rebuild or replace

Hi, I have an original (or close to) 1928 brick detached garage. Nonconforming structure that snugly fits 2 sedans (sits on the rear and side property lines) on a city lot. Really no chance to expand. It's been decently maintained over the years (new pad <5 years old), but it needs a new roof...

    3rd bay garage addition

Thanks. Understand that the garage would have to come up to code and I'd have to confirm the build/setbacks comply with code...but I wanted to make sure the concept for the garage and driveway design made sense. Don't have to worry about site permeability, there is a very large side yard off to...

    3rd bay garage addition

Good points. There isn't a door...but there are 2 windows on the 'shared' wall, so one of them could be blown out to make a door. Fair question regarding structural integrity...would have to have a structural engineer assess.

    3rd bay garage addition

Thanks. I am 95% sure the garage is original to the house, as there are a crapton of similar garages in the area....the brick/mortar are the same same color as the house. The door is awful and not original. See attached. The plot is notched surrounding the garages. My garage <2 feet off the...

    3rd bay garage addition

So, I purchased a lovely c1928 house with a detached brick 2 car garage. Mulling around the idea of 1. Reworking the kitchen to combine kitchen and breakfast nook 2. Enlarging the garage 3. Converting the garage to an attached garage (thru a breezeway at the end of the former breakfast nook)...

    Anyone move a brick garage?

Thanks all... The other option that popped into my head today is to extend the garage towards the driveway by 8 feet (which will allow for today's larger cars and does not expand upon any existing setbacks) and build a connection between the two. The kitchen window facing the garage/turnaround...

    Anyone move a brick garage?

Actually, there is a semi local company that is a member of International Association of Structural Movers...and they moved a brick Indiana schoolhouse. So it can be done. The question will be which is cheaper? Move or rebuild. Thx

    Anyone move a brick garage?

Hi all... I know moving a stick built garage can be done. I want to put an offer on a house with a detached 2 car c. 1920 brick garage. Garage in good shape. I wan to move it maybe 20 feet (10 feet nearer the house/10 feet closer to edge of drive). Can you move a brick garage like you can a...

Changing a garage to a carport...hear me out

That is definitely in the cards. Not ideal, but workable, particularly considering I think the garage is already close to 20 feet deep (and I am pretty sure they stole some of the garage for useless KT dining nook).

Changing a garage to a carport...hear me out

Thanks Bill, that's an idea that I had as well. Good to know I'm not completely nuts :) I know I have to check jurisdictions and budget...and it's probably a big reason why the house isn't selling (most places here have detached 2s). But it would be helpful to know my options. I'll check on...

Changing a garage to a carport...hear me out

Am interested in a house that is on a narrow lot. It ticks all the items on the must have list EXCEPT it only has a 1 car attached garage. And I have 3 cars. And the lot is not wide enough to add another bay to the side :wtf: I'm okay with having my DD in the driveway, but want my other cars...
