    What Saved Your A$$?

Arriving at work I found my clutch linkage on my '72 Dodge Dart was not working properly. I thought it might be a simple adjustment. Turns out I needed to replace a portion of the linkage. At the time I was working as a blacksmith at a living history museum so it was no problem forging a new part.

    Mechanic Pants

At times at work I had to wear the blue collar uniform that came off the uniform truck. The uniform was made with a 50/50 cotton polyester fabric that irritated my skin. My employer was resistant to issuing an all cotton uniform. Once I made it clear that as a blacksmith I work with fire and...

    Finally got an Anvil

You did steal it, what a price! Vulcan and Fisher anvils are great if you have neighbors nearby. That thwack sound they make is so much easier on the ears than a ringing Hay-Budden.

    torpedo heaters

An old aquaintance years ago rigged up a contraption made of metal reminiscent of a swinging small pet door that he directed the blast at from the torpedo heater. This kept the roar of the heater outside. He also rigged a thermostat inside his garage that signaled when the heater should fire...

    Made in China

I'm a DIY'er that works on the family's cars. I use a mixture of older U.S.A. tools and newer lower quality Chinese tools to keep my costs down, but I learned the hard way not to buy **** Chinese replacement parts, only OEM if possible.

    Anvil Advice

Try doing some actual forging on the anvil before you do any refinishing work. Experienced blacksmiths can work around a somewhat worn anvil such as yours.

The vise placement has the look of a museum curator's handiwork.

cutting bearings off a shaft with a torch/plasma cutter

In '77 I spun and welded an inner front wheel bearing to the stub axle of my '62 Chevy. The mechanic skillfully cut it off with a cutting torch. With new bearings installed and the repair complete I drove home from Southern California to New York.

Beeswax Finish on Steel - anyone with experience?

Use to use a mix of one part beeswax, one part linseed oil, and one part turpentine. This finish was only used for indoor applications. I have a window grill I made over 30 years ago with this finish. It would last max about three years before it needed a touch up. One of my blacksmith teachers...

    Oil Drain Pans

My Dad used a no cost beat up, chipped white enamel wash basin from the 1950's until the mid 1980's. I've been using an old dish washing basin. BTW my oil fill funnel is made from a discarded 1 qt. plastic oil bottle.

    6pt & 12pt Sockets

Get the 6 points first. Your up in the northern reaches of the rust belt. 6 point sockets always give you a better chance of removing rusted, frozen nuts and bolts without rounding them off.

    Choosing a strut assembly

2nd this. Installed Monroe Quick Struts on my 2001 Toyota Camry over 30,000 miles ago. No problem with quality or performance of the struts.
