Price check on a craftsman table saw

Here in the metro NYC area this is a $50-150 dollar saw. Older population around here and plenty of grandpas had this saw. Their sons and especially their grandsons typically have never used such a tool.

    Tools that always go missing?

Soapstone It's used for marking metal in a blacksmith or fabrication shop and its always missing. Heard a story years ago of a blacksmith who was so frustrated with missing soapstone that he bought a new box of it, dropped it so it would break into small bits, picked the box up, open it, and...

    Occasional Heat for Garage work

An aquaintnence heated his uninsulated garage with a kerosene fired salamander placed outside and aimed at a swinging small pet door that he fireproofed. He had a thermostat inside the garage wired to the heater to regulate when it would fire. He couldn't stand the roar from the salamander so he...

Modern alternative to linseed oil for metal preservation?

Not a modern alternative but a classic finish I learned in blacksmithing school was a mixture of one part linseed oil, one part beeswax, and one part turpentine that would be applied to cold metal to inhibit rusting and highlight the forged aspect of the work. You can vary the proportions of the...

    Building a forge

Thumper68 Sorry, I can't offer any suggestions based on experience on piping to draft from one outlet to another. The steel fabricated side draft that I worked at on occasion had a 10 inch round pipe outlet straight up through the roof. It "sucked" ok but probably would have drawn better...

    Building a forge

Thumper68 It might be a false economy to use one hood for two purposes. The forge that you've built so far is perfect for a fabricated side draft hood. ABANA may still offer plans.

Just curious - Any one ever live in their shop?

I was doing a carpentry job inside an old row house on East 53rd St., just east of 3rd. Ave. in NYC. In the house next door a carpenter rented the entire third floor and turned it into a open shop space with no interior walls. He framed out and sheet rocked a 12'x12'x8' "cube" to sleep in.

    noisey anvil

Between the stand and the anvil base I've placed sheet lead and then fastened the anvil down firmly. Another option, but not as effective, is to place a large magnet to it's side.

Rusted nuts: Torch vs. CRC Freeze-Off ?

Oxy-Acetylene torch. I live on the edge of the rust belt. Had to remove an O2 sensor that was 20 years old from a 1991 Ford F-250. Soaked it for 2 weeks with acetone+aft. Broke off 02 sensor with a hammer so I could get a 22 mm socket on what remained of it with a breaker bar. It actually...

    Show me your ANVIL

Hey great white tj, Years ago a buddy of mine mounted his anvil, like yours, in a sand filled 30 gallon grease drum. The sand mounting deadened the ringing of the anvil. He had problems however with the anvil shifting out of level when working on the tail or horn of the anvil. Are...

How many bundles do I need?

Back in Oct. 2010 I did a total tear off of a 2 car garage, 22x20ft, 4 in 12 pitch roof. Used 3 tab shingles and nailed with a China Freight roofing nail gun. Of course felt paper was rolled out and installed first. I needed a iittle more than 7 square of shingles to do the job. That job kicked...

Any of you guys work through college?

Is this even possible with the cost of college today? Over 40 years ago I started driving a cab in N.Y.C. Made good money, could support myself, pay SUNY at Stony Brook tuition but only carried 12 credits per semester. BTW tuition was $450 a semester!
