Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

Thanks - and yes, that definitely complicates things.... What I had been planning (and discussed with my concrete contractor) was digging out an extra 6" under the pad in 36"x36" squares (or perhaps 30"x30") centered on each post, though obviously the ones near the edge will not be that size)...

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

Agreed (with them no knowing because it's used), but it's frustrating they can't even give a 'sure, that'd be ok' or 'no way...you need x inches". And you're totally correct about waiting. I plan to wait a month before installing the mezzanine (or the lift) - recommendation is 28 days of curing.

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

Agreed. To be fair, they have said that if I need them they can do professional engineering drawings/calcs, but they would add 25% to the cost. They also tell me that only a very small percentage of their customers require or ask for them...

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

Yes - I totally appreciate that your calculations were 'ball park' estimates (and you made it very clear where you had made assumptions, which were generally erring on the side of caution). I've 'redone' those with some more refined info I had, and feel pretty comfortable that I'm in the 'safe...

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

As mentioned in my response above to @wssix99, that seems to be the biggest area of concern. Having taken his example and modified it to match more closely my mezzanine (largest area on 4 posts is the 17' x 17'), and also adding in the dead weight of the structure itself (at what I think is a...

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

Thanks - that's definitely does put it in context, and is very helpful - clearly the 'point load' on the concrete is very low compared to the PSI. I hadn't realized that the psi rating could be considered so (relatively) simply - for example, I had wondered if the 'difference' in loading between...

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

I forgot to mention that in my post - the concrete will be 3,500 psi. I've posted a plan of the mezzanine in response to another post above which answers the square footage

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

That's a big span, and a lot of hay! But I'm guessing that the 48" frost walls help - I don't have those, just a 6" pad which is overlaid on 2" of insulating foam for the 2' in from the wall. This is apparently how the pole barn supplier (Mortons) specs their floors.

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

Understood - unfortunately I have no idea what the bearing strength of the soil it. It's typical New England rocky soil, and there appears to be ledge (solid rock) at about 48". It has been disturbed though to install 2" PVC conduit and septic lines, now buried. It is being mechanically compacted.

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

Thanks - that is good to know. I assume that 14" x 14" counts as a 'large plate'? (the mezzanine columns are 8" x 8"), and on the sides next to the wall the plate is 'offset' so the post is next to the wall - you can see that in the drawing I just posted.

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

That would be very helpful...just to get an idea. I've attached a floor plan of the mezzanine below, with dimensions Here's the numbers I have - It is rated to 125 lb/sq foot (though I doubt I will load it close to that...this is my home workshop/garage) - I do not know how much it weighs (but...

Concrete footings for mezzanine in pole barn and slab insulation

Hi, We are preparing for the pouring of the slab in my pole barn. The slab is spec'd to be a 6" Fibre Glass reinforced concrete, with styrene insulation vertically at the outside edge (almost as a former), and under the pad horizontally at the edge (I think for 3', but need to check that) I...

I'm curious - what is that software that you've used for the drainage design? I was looking for something similar recently, and ended up drawing (with a pencil) the drainage isometrics for my permit. -Steve

Mr Cool Minisplits for 2,000 Sq Ft insulated garage in New England for year round use - recommendations?

What do you mean by 'warm'? (I'm pretty comfortable working at anything over 55'F)

Mr Cool Minisplits for 2,000 Sq Ft insulated garage in New England for year round use - recommendations?

I've completely automated it using a PLC. In-house I have a regular transfer switch. The PLC monitors the power and the transfer switch, and if the grid power goes out it starts the glow plugs, primes the pumps and gets it ready to start. It's officially a 10KW unit, but that's military spec -...

Interesting - I didn't realize Mr Cool did 'DIY' ducted units. I will be interested to see what they recommend....

Mr Cool Minisplits for 2,000 Sq Ft insulated garage in New England for year round use - recommendations?

Good point. The garage will have a small 1/2 bath, and I plan to have a small heater in there, and that will contain the only plumbing. Allows me to keep the temperature on the building lower, and also provides antifreeze protection in the case the mini-splits fail for some reason. In terms of...
