Mud truck axle project, meritor 5 ton planteries & ford 9"

2:1 hub reduction. I'm starting with either 5:1 or 5.5:1 total reduction, I have all the way to 8.20:1 available

    A Watts linkage alternative

A wishbone setup does exactly what you want (may be what you are describing, but your pictures aren't showing).

Mud truck axle project, meritor 5 ton planteries & ford 9"

I picked up the last knuckle and an alignment bar from Clay a few days later and was able to get the front housing fit up nice and straight and housing welded to the tubes. Set the knuckles at 0* caster, and pinion at 15* up. Checked housing length and I'm 1mm long off nominal, not to bad. Last...

Mud truck axle project, meritor 5 ton planteries & ford 9"

Did the mock on the rear different, wanted to check tube lengths and the wms and overall width, came up with 86" wms and 96" overall.

Few pictures of the backside of the knuckle. Thinnest section is ~3/8" thick, thickest is 1"+, I'm going to trim back a few parts of the casting so I have full backing for the weld.

Mud truck axle project, meritor 5 ton planteries & ford 9"

Spent yesterday out with Clay of EMF Rod Ends & Steering components, and we were able to get the knuckles bored out and all but one tube/knuckle fit together (I screwed up reading on of the last measurements and we didn't bore the hole big enough by about .010"), either way everything worked...

    I beam Welding/jig/work Table

Dunno if he has anything left, if he does it'll be on kijiji. Don't remember him having anything that long though, but you could always weld a few beams together.

    I beam Welding/jig/work Table

I'm a little confused with what your asking? The axle housing I had hanging off the jib is at least 500lbs.

I also did some digging in my old pictures, and this is what set me on this path with the whole using the meritor parts & a 9" center. I stumble across a user on another site about 6-7 years ago, way before the whole planetary axle thing got going. Anyway, what he did was he took the meritor...

Mud truck axle project, meritor 5 ton planteries & ford 9"

Getting some work done, double checked the axle tube measurements, the went ahead and cut the tubes for the front & back, also cut down and cleaned up both 9'' cases for the 4" OD tubes. Mocked thing up to get a rough size/weight idea, and so far not too bad. I also tossed together one of the...

    I beam Welding/jig/work Table

Thought I'd bump this back up. Attached is a picture of partly why this table is built as heavy as it is, plus having that jib crane bolted down is really, really handy. btw, that housing is ~500lbs.

Have You NEVER Parked a Vehicle in a Garage?

If the weather is really cold or I have work on it. Other than that no, my work in the garage at home or at the family farm could be very harmful to the vehicles parked inside, so for the most part I only park if there is good reason to. Otherwise it's a work shop , not a garage. For those of...

Drilling A Leaf Spring With A Mag Drill and Annular Cutter

Do not apply any heat to the leaf's, you will never get the original properties back, and it can fail at the area between non heated/heated. Leaf springs use a highly hardenable steel (higher carbon contents iirc), so applied heat can harden/soften the material pretty easy. That said, center...

Best way to MIG weld a cast steel exhaust manifold?

There are a couple good high nickle mig wires out there (crown alloy's has one that I'm using on a project), 309L fillers also work well for dissimilar metals and/or for high carbon content metals. First trick, remove the crack completely. Drill the tips out first to prevent it from cracking...

Mud truck axle project, meritor 5 ton planteries & ford 9"

Quick update; I did some measuring last night, axle tubes are going to be 578mm long and 440mm long, passenger drop (rear engine with flipped 9" center. Little different then the factory meritors, but still pretty close, The difference is due to the 9" center and the axles being closer...

Tig welding with a pace maker/ defib

It's the High Frequency that causes issues. In school there was a guy with a metal plate somewhere in his body from an old accident, they were TIG welding (with high freq.) and in that particular situation the HF affected the plate in a way to cause him a bunch of health problems that resulted...

Hardening ductile (nodular) iron by welding?

If the welder knows how to weld cast (regardless if it's nodular, ductile, etc) iron, and uses the proper consumables/process, the weld will always come out rather hard. This is because the harden-ability of the materials is very high. The only potential fault would be not understanding how...

Mud truck axle project, meritor 5 ton planteries & ford 9"

The planetary ends will take a lot of the shock out of the system. I will eventually upgrade to the best money can get (3.8 bearing sizes, 10" ring gear, 35spl pinion, etc) and use these for spares. I know these are not the strongest, but they are going to be stronger than factory and they...

Mud truck axle project, meritor 5 ton planteries & ford 9"

Quick update. Took the parts over to Clay, pretty straight forward to get this done. Some messing around to jig up the knuckles to be able to bore them out is needed, but nothing really complicated. Picked up the Axle tube from Team Tube yesterday, 10' pf 4" OD x 1/2" thick 1026 DOM tubing...

    Lets see your workbench

Here's my overbuilt monster: There's a thread in the fabrication section on it. Built it for heavy fabrication/jig work, didn't want a table that would bend/warp when I have a thousand pounds of weight on it .
