    CFL wattage

I did not do any calculations. I mainly went off of Veno's thread and got ideas from it. He went with 16 bulbs in a 40 x 50 so I figured add one more row and go with 20 bulbs in a 50 x 50. I am still wiring it up but will post up when done. I am in the the Texas Panhandle. It gets fairly cold...

    CFL wattage

I took the ideas from Veno's thread and am going to light my 50x50x14 shop with CFL's. I am currently mounting the sockets. There will be a total of 20 lights. There are 5 rows of lights spaced 10' apart on the purlins and the lights are 12.5' apart on the purlins with the end lights 6' from...

Advice needed: Swapping two 100 amp panels for two 200 amp panels

Weatherhead to meter: 4/0 AL is good for 200 amps. You are wanting to put 400 amps on it so it needs to be bigger. Meter to panels #2 AL is good for 100 amps. You are wanting to put 200 amps on it so it needs to be bigger.

    Steel building wiring idea

You may recall my previous thread about how to place the outlets in my steel building when the girts were at seven foot. I decided to buy 6" C's and make another run around the perimeter of the shop at four foot. There was no need to screw the outer panels to the girt since it was only for the...

    grounding question

Thank you. Lots of interesting discussion in this thread but that is a clear explanation of my situation of what to do. This grounding / bonding stuff is so confusing. I totally understand what you are saying but then at the same time since the neutral is bonded to the case at both the meter...

    grounding question

Rubber pipe LOL sorry about that. I just did not know what it is called. It is a flexibile conduit of some sort. It looks like a hydraulic hose but it is grey and appears to be all rubber with no metal in it.

    grounding question

I found this picture online (not from my power company). I kind of illustrates what I have except that my main panel is not on the same post it is 4' away on a barn wall. In the picture it looks like they are saying to run the ground wire to both the meter socket and the main panel and connect...

    grounding question

Thanks for the replies. No water at the building so no issues there. At first the barn has been wired like this for about 12 yrs with no problems so it is probably ok as dugger10 stated but the rod, wire, and clamp to make it right would only cost me about $15 so I would like for it to be...

    grounding question

I recently bought a place and it has two electric meters. One for the house and one for the barn which is several hundred feet from the house. Everything is underground. The barn meter is attached to a pedestal of some sort that was placed by the power company and is about 4' from the edge of...

    steel building wiring questions

Charles - Are those outlets installed on a 7' girt? If so do you find it inconvienent? I am 5'10 and can reach it but it is a bit of stretch. Would be really difficult if something was up against the wall.

    steel building wiring questions

Are you saying they call them different things based on where they are used? The purlins / girts on the walls and the ones used on the roof are identical on my building. They are all 8" C - purlins. I was going to use 6" for the outlets because it is cheaper.

    steel building wiring questions

I just called the steel supplier and the 25' 6 inch c purlins are $25 each. One wall of my building is all doors so 6 purlins will do the trick. $150 and a couple hours work and I will have another purlin run @ 4'.

    steel building wiring questions

I am going to wire my 50x50 steel building using 3/4" EMT. My question is the building has 6 - I beam main frame supports, one on each corner and one on each side in the middle. The base of the building has a base angle running along the floor, one 8" purlin 7' above the ground, and then one at...

    shop build underway

We have broke ground on the new shop. It is going to be a 50' x 50' steel building with 14' sidewalls, 3 12' x 12' doors on one end, and spray foam insulation.

    compressor plumbing between buildings

Thanks for the replies. The air use in the main shop would be an all the time thing so i am looking for a permanant solution (and high volume) so a hose does not seem practical. I am leaning toward the overhead option. Like My original post said there is only 12' between the buildings and they...

    compressor plumbing between buildings

I have two metal buildings located 12' apart. The both have 220 electric but one I use just for storage and the other for working. I want to put my compressor in the "storage" building so I don't have to hear it when I am working. What is the best way to run the air to the other shop? I like...

electrical before or after spray foam

I am getting a 50x50 steel building built next week. I am going to go with the spray foam insulation. Should I do the electrical first and have them spray over it, or insulate first and then put the electrical on top?
