    The VISES of Garage Journal

Just bought this Reed 3C on eBay. I've started making a stand for it along the lines of the one I just built for my Rock Island, with barbell weights inside the 19" rim. The junk yard had the mate to the rim I used on the Rock Island stand.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Finished the stand for the Rock Island vise. Total weight for the vise and the stand is around 300 lbs. including a stack of 25 lb. barbell plates secured inside the 19" wheel.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I'm building a stand for my 5 1/2" Rock Island vise, and came up with an idea for adding weight to the base. In my older years, I no longer need a stack of 25 lb. barbell plates that have been gathering dust. I decided to incorporate them into the base of the stand as shown in the pictures...

Fireball Tool Hardtail Vise - The Best Vise On The Market???

It would be nice to see the British 400 lb. vise and the Fireball side by side.

Fireball Tool Hardtail Vise - The Best Vise On The Market???

Not withstanding all of the above, the guy makes a damn nice looking vice, and at 400 lbs. possibly the largest one

Fireball Tool Hardtail Vise - The Best Vise On The Market???

I've read the stuff his Facebook page too. However, I just got a pm from him yesterday on a British MIG welding chat group saying he is making them and they are 3,200 English pounds.

Fireball Tool Hardtail Vise - The Best Vise On The Market???

A guy in England makes this 400 lb. vise with 10" wide jaws & 18" jaw opening for the same price as the Fireball.

    Rock Island Vises - History/Info?

I just bought a nice Rock Island 76a that has a dynamic jaw with "96b" in raised letters on it. The 96 was the stationary version of the 76. Is it possible that some 76 vises came through originally with 96 dynamic jaws? I imagine they are essentially the same part.

    Reed 105 Vise handle fix

I just picked up this older restoration of a Reed 105 vise off eBay. When I received it in an oversized shredded box with no padding, I was amazed that it withstood the trip to my house undamaged. I could find no fault with it other than a bent handle, which was cleverly non-apparent in the...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

There isn't any slop forward & backward. The nut assembly is just too small for the slot.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I picked up an old Columbian 504 1/2 vise the other day and disassembled it. The main nut literally floats around in the ways of the vise body. It fits snuglyly in my 504 vise, so I assume it's from a 504. The spindle fits it however. The base of the nut is .900" across tapering down to...

4 x 6 bandsaw converted for vertical work only

Since getting my 7 x 12 Jet bandsaw, I reasoned that I would probably never again be using my little 4 x 6 for horizontal cut-off work. I decided to convert it for strictly vertical cutting. I made guide adapters to take the twist out of the blade, giving me a throat depth of just over 5...

Table for vertical sawing on 4 x 6 bandsaw

Since I bought my 7" x 12" Jet horizontal bandsaw, my little 4 x 6 has been sitting idle. I decided to make a sturdy table for it so I could do some vertical sawing. I decided that the simplest approach was to use some 1/4" mild steel plate for a base and a table, and some 4" x 4" x 1/4" thick...

    Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT Garage overflow

I had the challenge of trying to fit three cars and my shop equipment into a two car garage. After drawing out multiple location arrangements, I ended up putting two of the cars on a lift, and shoehorning in my bigger shop machines. The rest of my shop equipment ended up in my basement. My...

Harbor Freight 20 Ton Hydraulic Press Upgrades

Here the 2nd table is installed in the press above the lowered Swag brake. Two of the height adjustment frame hole levels are still available above the brake. The 6x6 block of wood acts as a spacer, and adds stiffness if needed. The 18 lb. table can be removed and the brake raised for use in...

Harbor Freight 20 Ton Hydraulic Press Upgrades

For any who may want to do something like this to their Harbor Freight press, here are some specifics about the parts used: The brackets to be welded to the ends of the channel were CNC plasma-cut from 1/4" mild steel. The diagram below shows the dimensions. The 22 1/4" long channel is 4" wide...

Harbor Freight 20 Ton Hydraulic Press Upgrades

I'm in the process of dealing with this issue myself. This is the approach I'm taking. If you have a winch installed to raise and lower the deck, the problem is easily fixed. Just lower the existing deck (table) way down, and fabricate a second deck from a length of channel. It can be...

Harbor Freight 20 Ton Hydraulic Press Upgrades

See photos below. The cam followers are 3/4" diameter with a 3/8" diameter stud. 3/8" nylon bolt heads maintain distance between plates and upright frame steel channel. Plate is 3/16" mild steel.

    DIY Rotary Welding Positioner

It is undeniably true that my Troyke rotary table is being used for a much more mundane purpose than that for which it was intended. I do have a larger and much newer Yuasa horizontal/vertical rotary table which I have yet to use. I tried to sell the 9" Troyke multiple times on eBay, and the...
