    The VISES of Garage Journal

What's the opposite side got for numbering? That's only the 3rd Craftsman I've seen with the double arrows - one of the others is in this post Craftsman outsourced (prior to China) at least to Rock Island and Reed, although I've still no idea on who made/the origins of the double-arrow ones...

I believe from this archived conversation that you can interchange them to extents. This is also worth a look.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

From a 1946 catalog page, that Parker "Eclipse" Machinists' Vise 975 should weight in @ 104lbs with 5" jaws, 8" opening, and replaceable jaws. Back then sold for $30. I'd say that's not original paint just because of where it covers, that it is scalloped and such; however, I have seen some...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Are they diamond checkered or smooth? I try to only go by what I find that Stanley published, and I don't know why they would sell a 765 and a 745 as two separate models if the 765's are exactly the same as the 745's. That catalog page says, "No 76[x] vises are equipped with removable, diamond...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

The oldest catalog page I have that mentions a 765 is 1953; not to say it's older/newer than that, that's just the only one I've found/collected. The "Stanley Victor Clamp Base Vises" go back at least to 1926 and at least forward to 1953, but only go up to 746 on that page. The...

Saw 2 8" vises in one day!

Dustin, From what little I know of Morgan, the fact that yours is a Chicago (rather than Aurora or Milwaukee) should mean that it was manufactured between 1921 & 1947.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

@jusridin: While the Athol (to me) is the best of the bunch most likely, the Wilton would make it on my bench just for having the mini-anvil and pipe-clamp area for the most versatility. The Columbian is still definitely worth restoring also though, and all three are guaranteed to be better than...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Allright folks, I think I've scrubbed a good most of the data in this thread into my wiki. That said, there were some posts that stuck out along the way, that albeit they are old (some a year or more ago), I didn't notice an answer so I figured I'd chime in now. My apologies if these have...

    Ratchet picture tear down pics?

It'd be cool/nice reference to see 1-2 labeled images for different styles of ratchets. Wouldn't need 'em for every ratchet, just a general e.g., a round-head vs regular pointing out the pawl/etc. Some of the really newbie-ish threads that pop up could point to such an image so folks know the...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Hopefully I didn't step on any toes by doing this - but in my search for information about Reed vises I'd started to build a table of information about them. Somewhere along the line that spun out of control and I started trying to keep track of information about all of these vises - since there...

    Ratchet picture tear down pics?

I like the three-shot style. Simple, but gets the idea on how to fix/work on one - or just how it works in general.

    Ratchet picture tear down pics?

What *I* think would be neat, since I like information-overload, would be to see images like this get worked into a wiki, something like what OWWM or AlloyArtifacts have going. After all, spreading information and how-to's (to me) is what makes the internet so great a tool!

    Delta/Rockwell/Walker-Turner DP220 Salvaging

Thanks Jack, I saw the markings on the quill, and an exploded diagram that said the part was an "Indexer". I *thought* that was what it was for, but wasn't sure why I'd have two ways to control depth. I'd just figured to use the threaded column.:D

    Delta/Rockwell/Walker-Turner DP220 Salvaging

So, turns out the old wires - despite not having colour to them - had little metal rings inwards towards the motor on each - that had colours and numbers printed on them. So I got this wired up last night and started the old thing. I know the motor hasn't run in at least the past 10 years, and...

    Delta/Rockwell/Walker-Turner DP220 Salvaging

Figures, I was overlooking looking at whether the capped-plug was just terminated or tied together. Since they were tied together I think I've got the wiring figured out. So here goes the motor or here goes the neighborhood! :shocking:

    Delta/Rockwell/Walker-Turner DP220 Salvaging

This shows the wiring when I first opened it: The red/black from a cord was going to a 2-prong plug. The black/white from a cord was going to the taped-off 2nd cord. This shows the cross-wiring from one cord to the other. The white from endless-cord is attached to the single black wire that is...

    Delta/Rockwell/Walker-Turner DP220 Salvaging

So my wife's grandfather passed away a few years ago, and recently while going through one of his barns my brother-in-law and I came across this drill press. It hasn't been abused as much as just forgotten. Today we brought it back to my house so that I can try and salvage it back into...
