SUGGESTIONS ON A TITLE NAME TOO!!!!

Ok im going to start tearing stuff down and starting a thread. Is there anything else you all would like to see? Better pictures? Partially assembled ratchets? Labeled parts? Less or more of anything? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would like to keep this as simple as possible just for the sake of the forums. Is the anything I lack or any overkill? 3 Pictures seems to be adequate.

I come across a ton of random ratchets. Most I play with open up lube and toss in with my collection. Now I dont have a ton but around 50 or so. I was wondering if the community had any use for tear down pictures maybe 1 or 2 pictures of the internals for reference. If so I posted a poll and would like some feedback. I would host the pictures here so they never get lost.

You wont hurt my feelings posting "no" just give a reason why, never hurts to add to the discussion.

Most definitely!

Would help out greatly trying to figure out the inner workings of unknown ratchets or to use as a reference if someone forgets how it all goes back together.

I have bought a few ratchets missing pieces and made my due replacing springs and selector balls.

I dont have any pictures yet and the SR-2 I do not own.








This is going to be a big process for me. Most of the stuff I stumble upon is somewhat odd and dont see a whole lot of. Most are packed full of what looks like burnt diff grease.... Years of abuse.
Also I dont plan to give years, manufacturer, or any any other info. alloy artifacts has that covered very well.
Just part number, maybe teeth count, and exploded view.
Anyways input always welcome on what or how you would like to see this done.

Oyes, Nate, I think it'd be a good thread. But to save you some trouble before hand, I recall seeing a ratchet rebuild/clean thread around here already. It is an older thread but showed a few types of ratchets.

Just wanted to let you know in case. I know how taking pics along the way, plus uploading then arranging them in a good informative post can take a little time. (I'll dig up that post).


Edit: dug around and I think I found it but the pics are all take down. And if it isn't an easy search, it isn't helpful. I vote go for it.

Looks like there is an good amount of people interested in this so in a week or so Ill have a good start on the thread. If there are any requests for ratchets Ill try to pick some up when ever funds are available. Also Just like the other thread other members contributing helped a lot, only problem I see is some disappeared... maybe members can send me pictures to upload so they are all in the original posts. Work in progress.... any ideas are welcome.

What *I* think would be neat, since I like information-overload, would be to see images like this get worked into a wiki, something like what OWWM or AlloyArtifacts have going. After all, spreading information and how-to's (to me) is what makes the internet so great a tool!

I thought about hosting my own site to be able to better maintain and organized but as a new father, full time job, side job and maybe more school in the future time is short handed. I just wanted to give a little back to the forums, my time and some knowledge is not nearly the level as some members but ever little helps right? Anyways I got 10 rats soaking right now so I can give "CLEAN" detailed pics.

I have done a few Mac ratchets.The pain the *** part is the ball and spring,getting them in place without losing them.Lube them up before installing the cover.

I love the idea, nothing worse than pulling apart a ratchet you havent been into before and having a ring come flying out and not know how the hell it went in there to begin with.

I just upgraded my image hosting paid for a full year to upload higher resolution pictures. These were taken from a point and shoot. I can set up a light box and my DSLR and take some better pics without the confusing background. I will re-size smaller but higher res.

COMMENTS PLEASE!!!

I like the three-shot style. Simple, but gets the idea on how to fix/work on one - or just how it works in general.

It'd be cool/nice reference to see 1-2 labeled images for different styles of ratchets. Wouldn't need 'em for every ratchet, just a general e.g., a round-head vs regular pointing out the pawl/etc. Some of the really newbie-ish threads that pop up could point to such an image so folks know the right language for what they're talking about.

Awesome threads. My vision was to be over simplified. These seem to have tear down instructions and a ton on great info on them. I was trying to streamline, just overall exploded view (for reference not how to's) . However I just want to make something useful so others may benefit. So I guess the question is how in-depth do you want each ratchet? I spent an hour on the Dayton in "medium" condition cleaning every crack with microfibers and a pic. A little excessive yes, but wanted "clean" pictures.

A ratchet disassembly thread is definitely a must need sticky here. I feel the how to's could be great reference guides (sorry all I've been doing at work lately is SOPs/WIs).
