A friend suggested i make up another set of shelving like I have for my component storage:
But only a handful of my blow mould boxes are the same width, so that isn't going to work. Was a nice idea though. I did briefly consider whether some wire racking could be used as a vertical rack using...
Yeah, messed around with that, and perhaps its just because im putting them in a cabinet, but there is a ton of wasted space when stored like that. Plus with the cabinet edges its a multi stage process to get the edge ones out.
TBH this is my default if there are no better suggestions.
With the long weekend and lockdown it felt like i spent about half of each day in the garage, but not a huge amount to show for it. Welded up a quick and dirty stand for the vacuum cleaner to go in the house so that the stick vac doesnt keep getting knocked over etc:
While that getting cut up...
Recently I picked up a few specialist tool sets at a shop that was closing down, mainly getting things that I already have and used but missing parts for. Things like bearing puller or press sets, noid light kit, and rivnut installer etc. All those sort of things that its really useful to keep...
24x24 is doable, even if you have woodworking, metalwork, and automotive tools.
Heck i keep all the family bikes, storage tubs and brewing gear in mine. Its squishy, but gets the job done.
For inspiration have a look at Jack Olsen's 24x24 garage.
Got a bit of time on quarantine to get some of the last bits done.
I remade the angle grinder hanger for the new location and got it setup:
Then I started on the last big stand, for the lathe.
First, made 6 more hockey puck feet:
Then welded up one frame:
Decided to do the top a bit...
Might even need to pack it all up again.... thinking about moving house soon.
That said, this is why Im designing the current stands to be movable with pallet jacks :)
Today my MT3 to ER32 collet adapter set arrived, and came in a dinky box, so I decided to make up some trays to store them in.
Basis of the tray is this Siemens cable trunk compartment that I picked up for free from another forum. Given away because they have the old Siemens logo on them...
Few more updates before i get started on the lathe stand.
First up I managed to get a very good deal on a set of full depth mid drawers and then picked up a full depth top draw setup from H&F in their Coronasale
Bit of an overkill, but will allow my tools to be much less cramped and give...
Funny you mention that, as we will probably end up moving this year if we can find the right place to buy.
Anyway, on with the build, it took a little while, but I've been slowly slogging away on the mill stand. Got the feet on and gave it a lick of paint:
Also got a water heater base pan...
Finally got some time today to finish off the component stand:
Still needs some sorting of stuff and more labelling, but its functional and good enough for now.
Its no Sortimo, but it also cost 1/10th the price, even less than the Tactix thing from Bunnings. So I'm happy there.
Also half...
Now that the welding stand is done I started work on the new component and bolt storage stand. A while ago I was inspired by the Sortimo system that Adam Savage uses in his shop, but didnt want to spend the huge amounts of money getting the Sortimo gear in Australia. Instead i ended up using...
Haha.
I checked the over height truck route before heading off, and ended up following a container truck for about 3/4 of the way home, which was good for peace of mind.
Annoyingly the load kept slipping diagonally despite being cross strapped.
On Saturday i got around to loading up the trailer with 4m sticks of steel in a rather sketchy fashion, but got them all home no worries:
Then I set about getting some stands made up. The first on the agenda is the new welding trolley, which gets a cabinet out of the way and hence reclaims...
I end up using the black and yellow ones that you can get a 6 pack for $50. They are much more robust than the clear ones, and stack really nicely to boot.
But I lashed out the $26 for the tree box too. Now to try and get it up in the ceiling space.
Just got back on GJ after several months and caught up. Really sorry to hear of Steve's passing, and so sorry for your loss Andrew.
Take care and blessings.

After a bunch of only car stuff happening in the garage I decided that it needed a revamp, partly because I had to clear out our garage at our house so we could sell it.
First up was to get rid of the bandsaw and drill press, and add another bay of shelving above where they were, so that I...
