    Help increasing size of taper

Do you have any calipers? If you can get some close measurements you might find it is a common taper, might could find a used reamer on ebay etc. I would find out what it is before I went to cutting and welding imo. Of course you would still have to file the keyway, which would be a pita to. If...

    What's a decent bore guage?

Its probably fine and works for people all over to use a mic as a reference. But I think the point is that its not easy or cheap to check a bore within .0001. Just because a tool has .0001 resolution, doesnt mean it is that accurate. And a tenth in the machining world is .0001. Half a tenth...

OK Contractors' justify your costs, or am I a sucker?

Some good points on both sides lol. A few things I wonder about though: Do you really need a 40K truck? Im sure some do. But can you not get a reliable truck that will do every thing you need it to do for less than 40k? I have seen a few contractors talking about employees screwing up...

    Looking to buy Dial Indicator.......HELP!!!

Some good advice in this thread. I wouldnt hesitate to buy a used one off ebay, if the seller has good feedback and sells machinist tools. Really thats the first place I look. A dial indicator is really where a lot of people go the cheap route, I have a few cheap ones myself. But if your going...

    Micrometers

Most mics have .0001 resolution, though not all. You could go with .001 resolution probably because you should still be able to get within .0005 with them if you know what your doing. I would go with .0001 myself, since they would only be slightly higher in price. I would go for Mitutoyo, I use...

The worlds longest tool.... err.. yard sale

Well I went this morning. Wasted trip. Lots of cool stuff, everybody is to high though. $35 for old snap-on and cornwell 3/8" ratchets, $500 Remington 1100s, $20 for small old beat up tool boxes, etc. Do these people like to just get out in the heat for the fun of it? I dont get it, but they...

The worlds longest tool.... err.. yard sale

I was going to go but backed out. I figure there is some deals to be had, but Im not to crazy about bumper to bumper traffic and large crowds, esp mixed with heat. The guy that sells the speeders goes to the local flea market, and he has had a small tool box full of speeders and extensions all...

    Rebuilding an ATV Starter

I try to save a buck every chance I get, but those Hondas in that time period is the longest lasting ATVs period. So oem may be the way to go. Its hard to beat a Honda built from 86 to 91 or 92. The 300s came out in '88, and I knew of one that seen lots of mud, and it kept the stock brake pads...

    Tap and Die Tips

I have never liked the ratcheting handles, you just cant get the right feel for it, breaking the chip. On bigger taps with through holes I guess they would be ok, but not what I would prefer. But when you get down into the small taps in blind holes, you are just asking for trouble with a...

    Tap and Die Tips

This is good advice. When you get down to 6-32 and under threads, even a couple of thousandths can make a huge difference. I always open the holes up as much as they can be. I dont even want to think about how many 6-32 blind holes I have tapped in 17-4. Whats fun is when somebody slips up and a...

    slowing down power tools

I use to have to dig wire out on a daily basis when I worked one job. Never in the jewels though, they just bounced right off them. I was always nervous about a wire sparking off them though. I was afraid I would blaze up.

    slowing down power tools

I guess I will get a better wheel or use it for something else. I was just hoping there was an easy way to have a $20 wire wheel and grinder set up.
