Drilling 1-1/8" holes in 1/4" mild steel

Maybe try asking a local machine shop. We did little walk in jobs all the time. We had insert drills which were the cats pajamas. The ingersoll insert drills we had would drill a near perfect hole in one inch steel all day long super fast. Purely diy I would try a good quality hole saw, and if...

    New Tool Disappointment

The shallow broach is useful if you are trying to start a nut and you have a deep socket on your ratchet, but how big a deal is it just grab the shallow. I could see liking both, but I think I would rather have the flexibility of the deep broach. You can always drop a nut or two in the deep...

    Locking flex head ratchets

I put some use on my Carlyle 3/8 today putting a new modified header on my Honda motorcycle, and wow I never realized I would like a flex head so much. This is the first one I have used and I found maybe 8 different times when I was able to bend the head and avoid having to turn the front wheel...

    Air Compressor Oil

I don't know what a compressor oil typically is as far composition and how it differs from engine oil, but all I use is engine oil. Whatever I have leftover from oil changes.

    Used ratchet prices?

I almost never buy any tools on ebay because the prices are usually close enough to new that I just buy new. I find all of my older ratchets at yard sales or flea markets. I am going to list my usa craftsman panel ratchets on there when I get a chance, they are some of the worst out there but...

    Locking flex head ratchets

I picked up the 3/8 yesterday, and ordered the 1/4 and 1/2 online. Unfortunately I didn't realize the 3/8 had a longer version available, but even the standard is longer than most 3/8 ratchets. I find the quality good, and I like the locking mechanism. The drag is pretty high compared to all of...

    Spreading the Bonney affliction!

Picked up this 4093 ratchet for $2 today, mostly because I didn't own a 1/2 plug before this one, and I'm sure I'll need one eventually. In looking it up online I don't see any others with proud rivets on the head. Anyone know why this one does? Maybe someone rebuilt it back in the day?

When wrench sets skip sizes, how do they decide which to skip?

I couldn't decide on a set that skipped sizes, so I bough the Stahlwille 26 piece metric wrench set that goes from 6-32 only skipping 31, and I also bought a 5.5 separately to round it all the way out.

Organizing tools to carry and work with

For my particular work needs I am happy with this Klein bucket bag. It has allowed me to organize way more than just the basic tool bags I used to use. I rarely need something that isn't in here.

Plomb tool picture thread - show your stuff!

704S mini adjustable from an estate sale today. Next to a 10 inch adjustable for size comparison.

    Drill bit hardness

I find brand and country of origin (ie how they're made) make the difference, not claims of steel and coating. I am poor and use regular store brand drills for most things, but I have a 13 piece set of Chicago Latrobe drills for hard stuff. They are black oxide coated hss with standard chisel...

    Best maintenance tool bag?

I found myself in a similar need of a mobile tool bag doing aircraft work. I started just using my dewalt drill bag, but have now landed on what I think is the best option for me, it's a Klein linesman bucket/bag, this particular one having lots of pockets for organization. If I remember I can...

World's First Ever Detachable Crowfoot Wrenches?

Just saw this thread, awesome job diving into the history of this stuff. That homemade rack for the crowsfeet is crazy cool, that kind of old school real use stuff is awesome to me.

    Flare nut wrench set

I have sk made craftsmen professional series, which can be found on ebay, and I also have some usa made Allen brand ones, that I believe someone said were made by williams, not sure on that. I would bet with new hardware that isn't seized or damaged tekton or hf would do you fine.

Not impressed with new Channellocks quality

I have probably 15 pairs of channel-locks from years of yard sales/flea markets. A few months ago I bought my first pair of Knipex cobra pliers for work and now I resent channel-locks. I will at some point get some for at home, a little more pricey, but a far superior product.

Anyone ever bought/made a Parker vise screw?

At my old job in a cnc shop we had a guy come in with a broken vice screw that also was a family piece, we made him 2 of them. Those examples were standard pitch acme screws, which size I do not remember, a cnc lathe can be set up to cut the threads pretty easily so long as you have the wide...

The Vintage New Britain and Associated Thread!

I have a 1/2 ratchet marked NBM 45, it has a pretty compact round head and has the lightest back drag of any ratchet I've felt. I'd like to get a koken to compare it to.

Move over Snap-on have a viable competitor for ratchets

I like that Koken offers a different style of ratchet, that being low drag vs high tooth count simply because the market is full of high tooth count. You can get snap on/matco industry leaders, Nepros 90 if you want a thing of beauty, or Gearwrench 120 for super tight situations, and those are...

    Gearwrench 1/2 Socket Set

Out of curiosity are Gearwrench sockets still made in Taiwan? I bought a set of ratcheting wrenches from a closing Sears that are made in China and they are junk, several bind and seize up, my older Taiwan made ones are solid though.
