Testing for spark on new Echo chainsaw

I thought of that earlier and tested for continuity. But I just tested resistance and got zero ohms between the cylinder threads and top of head.

Testing for spark on new Echo chainsaw

Me too. But what could the coil's electronics be sensing? Can't imagine it's compression. And I doubt rpms would have any purpose. I'll do some searching and see if a service manual is available.

Testing for spark on new Echo chainsaw

I'm still stumped but here's an update. The Echo dealer called and said they ran tests with the saw cold and warm and everything checked out. They noticed it wanted to die while idling so they increased the idle rpm, which wasn't covered under warranty so that cost me $56. I just picked up...

Testing for spark on new Echo chainsaw

OK. Good to know. But why does a 50-year old all original ignition (points, condenser, coil) on the McCulloch give such a nice visible spark at the plug and no visible spark on the Echo. Weak coil? The Echo dealer said it may be several weeks before they get back to me. They said they...

Testing for spark on new Echo chainsaw

That's a great suggestion I had never considered for small engines. Just hooked up my old Craftsman inductive timing light to the McCulloch and it works like a charm. Nice bright light. I will remember this tip.

Testing for spark on new Echo chainsaw

I was indoors when looking for spark and working at the same bench where I had my McCulloch disassembled. I moved the Echo's spark plug to the McCulloch and got a very bright visible spark with a manual spin of the flywheel. I also put my spark tester (similar to the one below) on the...

Testing for spark on new Echo chainsaw

Last fall I bought a 16" Echo chainsaw from Home Depot for something lighter and safer than my 50-year old McCulloch, which never had a chain brake. I used the Echo a few days last fall and once last week. But last week I could not get it started again about an hour after I used it. It...

Coating for chainsaw aluminum fuel tank interior

I don't have the capability to blast the tank but I've soaked all of the aluminum parts in my parts cleaner and they cleanup up nicely. I've ordered an 8 oz. can of the POR-15 fuel tank sealer so I will give that a shot. Since it's easy to take the top off the tank for inspection I feel...

Coating for chainsaw aluminum fuel tank interior

Thanks for the recommendation. I just read a bunch of reviews on Amazon and it looks like the perfect solution for this project. And something I will remember for other restoration projects.

Coating for chainsaw aluminum fuel tank interior

Last year, I decided it was time to replace my vintage McCulloch Pro 10-10 chainsaw that has served me well for decades. I bought an Echo chainsaw from HomeDepot and the ignition coil failed after using it only a few times. Sheesh! Trying to get an OEM replacement coil in a timely manner is...

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT Lee's Garage Shop

That is a very well equipped and organized shop for the space. Nicely done. Your pictures give me plenty of ideas I can use. In particular, your spray paint storage rack caught my eye. Can you share the source for that rack or is it something you fabricated?

I spend a lot of time in the mountains. So, one of the things I really like about Wyoming and the inter-mountain West is if you can see the mountains, you know where you are. I figured someone would recognize the range that dominates our view. Jackson has changed so much in the 35+ years...

Most people don't know that shocks freeze at that temperature. It feels like you have square tires. We experienced our first ground blizzard a few years ago just outside of Kemmerer. Nasty.

My wife's family is from Laramie and Cheyenne but we live on the west side of the state. Fortunately, we do not get the kind of wind Laramie does. But it was still difficult for me to install the metal roof solo. I had to quit each day around noon when the wind picked up. Twenty to 30 years...

Thanks. For a long time I admired the roof lines of a house we traveled by occasionally. It also had a clerestory. I'm glad my wife worked it into my early sketches. The clerestory windows add nice natural light to the center of the garage. That's my project vehicle, an 89 Toyota 4WD truck...

Between 705 & 1200 SQ/FT My Wyoming Dream Garage and Shop

Thanks everybody for the comments. I will post if I make any improvements. Not sure if this counts as an improvement, but I’ve agreed to build my wife a 160 sq.ft. standalone garden shed/studio this summer to reclaim the 9 sq.ft. of shop currently occupied by her gardening bench. I mean, really...
