Drives; Hmm, it's on a forklift tire/rim combo. Just a guess but if that was 8" (or 200 lbs.+) , this would have to make that rim maybe 16 or 18". Again I'm no pro, but I think the proportions are off. Even 5" or 6" seems to be pushing it to me. But I'd be happy to be wrong.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Outlaw- ah, ok I remembered it was something different but I wasn't sure what it was. While we're on the subject, I'll ask this; Were manufacturers making both replaceable and fixed jaws at the same time (thereby offering the replaceables as an option upgrade)? Or maybe perhaps the replaceable...

How To Trick Your Athol Vise

Our attention now turns to: Flattening The Bottom Of The Vise. This step might seem a little out of order, but hang in there and I think you'll see why I chose this step first. Many an ear has been broken off of the base of our vises from this undesirable condition. You see, the bottom face (the...

How To Trick Your Athol Vise

This now brings us to another area of the vise, the relationship between the main screw and the main nut. You may ask, "Why would we want to bother messing around with this area? What is to be gained in fooling around here?" Simply put... much. I'll explain a little here. If you hadn't noticed...

How To Trick Your Athol Vise

We now turn our attention to removing as much unnecessary friction as possible from the yoke/dynamic jaw relationship when closing the vise. "Why bother" you ask? Because you've hung in there and gone this far with that nice, shiny new handle and that mirror finished yoke, it's only a couple...

How To Trick Your Athol Vise

I measured the radius of the screw-yoke and transferred that dimension (actually I slightly decreased the radius on the end)to the interior face of the acorn handle end, thereby, eliminating any chance of "boogering" up the yoke because all contact is far outboard of the edges of the screw-yoke...

How To Trick Your Athol Vise

How to trick your Athol! Many of you know that I'm a big fan of utilizing the "spinner" handle function Parker incorporated on their later vises, (you know how you wondered what that threaded hole in the yoke was for!) so I decided to borrow that feature and incorporate it into these two Athols...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Yeah, it's funny I thought of that! I dig that look too. Like I say,I was first going to have him make the end cylindrical like the yolk itself, similar to some of the Dunlap and craftsmans. You know the ones, with all the hold down ends and the handle ends all themed the same way? I also new I...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Thanks all for the kind words! I didn't verbalize much on the resto itself. I made effort to "sleeve" the dynamic with a bronze bushing and almost contacted brother Scott to see if he wouldn't mind but after further measuring, the more I centered the screw inside the dynamic, the more the...

My father retired from Pratt & Whitney, took a package 55 and out. My fal works for Hamilton Sunstrand (formerly standard) and I used to work at HS until I moved out here. I was able to obtain a vise that my co-worker buddy gave me before it went to surplus.Wasn't nothing super terrific. Wilton...
