    The VISES of Garage Journal

Here is a 1902 ad for the Parker Vulcan vises. I do not know if they were ever marked Vulcan, and don't look quite as fancy. The reason I am adding this to the conversation, is that the Parker "V Grade" with Vulcan steel bbls, was the second cheapest grade in the Parker shotgun lineup, with the...

Black & Decker Professional Power Tools

That was my understanding at the time. They used to sell the same tools in black or yellow. I had a 1/4 sheet orbitals, and 3/8" drills that were the same in different colors.

That Reed is a nice one! The Jacobsen is interesting. I need to ask my neighbor more details, but he is an old retired truck driver, and said he used to occasionally haul a load of scrap vise parts out of somewhere in the Warren region. He didn't remember the name, but he used to root around in...

Beautiful vises! I need a 2C &3C to round out my Reed combination vises. I see yours has the early ball, and forge welded jaws.

That is a shame. A piece could be fitted but it is going beyond "worthwhile", since it may have to be rebored. Not that any of us has ever done anything that wasn't worthwhile .....

Mr. Wilton, if you have all your pieces, why not braze it back together?

Is that a #106, 6 incher? It looks like the base is 1 1/8" thick. Great vise!

The cheapest hammerless double they made was the Trojan, so it was definitely one they used.

Jason those look like good vises. I missed one by a couple minutes a few weeks ago at a flea mkt. A guy was rolling it around when i got there, and bought it for $50... I didn't know Parker had anything to do with them?

I found an older 4C in Erie for $175. It has the forge welded jaws, and pear shaped screw ball. It doesn't have a swivel base, but I am planning to put it on a pedestal when I find a heavy enough base. Later I found a 1C at the flea market for $50. It was weld spattered up, so I cleaned it up...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Does anyone recognize this gray box? It was red, and had a Snap-On sticker on itwhen I got it at a flea market. The logo was in the top left, but it is missing. I got it and the black Craftsman for $35. They were both rusty and the paint was coming off in sheets. I just pressure washed, and...

I got a pretty good one this morning. It is a 6" #155 Ridgid 61 CPN combination vise. I think this is a Desmond Stephan made one? I know some of you guys have studied Ridgids, and my memory is not the best. Has anyone figured out who made which Ridgids when? Was Desnond first, then Columbian...

Those are both pretty cool designs, and very useful for the average guy. The Wilton that pivots over, would be useful when you want to set something up parallel on the bench before you squeeze it. I seem to do that a lot, and regular round tube Wiltons make it more difficult than a square beam vise.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I thought the handle looked short, for such a big vise, and the cardboard had bigger corrugations than I have ever seen, but like a 10" Reed, if I haven't seen it, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist! I did wonder about the number 1 0 x?, but the picture with the tape looked real, and I figured...

Thanks Jason, but I figured I would pedestal mount that one. I very seldom swivel one anyway, I just go to a different vise that's facing the way I want....
