Congratulations Pierce on finding a Prentiss 185, these rarely come up. The few that I have seen had the Dorman Long cast lettering but it’s always in a different place. Prentiss bought long lengths of the steel, cut it to size and cast the Dynamic around it. I have seen one where the channel...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I finally completed the fourth shelving unit on my Prentiss vise smalls collection. These are all in the 2”-3” class with some larger Prentiss vises on the floor. There’s not a single broken base, chipped brow or cracked slide in the bunch.

Here’s a pic of a 100 year old Stanley vise that I found. These were really well made back in the day and I’m always happy to find them. This one has the original brown japanning from the factory still intact after all this time. I’m going to do a light cleaning with WD-40to preserve the...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

The Parker vise gods have seen fit to send me a beautiful little example and I’m really happy right now. This is a rarely seen #19 with the swivel base, it has 2” jaws and weighs in at a mere 8-1/2 lbs. The vise is right around 100 years old and it’s in amazing condition, I’m proud to add it to...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

It’s funny that you mention that. I just saw some pics of one that mounts in the trailer hitch and it will lift quite a bit. The problem is that it’s not cheap. I investigated further and there are models that sit on the ground but use the hitch as leverage. I like that idea and it seems...

I got to cross off the top spot on my vise wish list today. This big logo Reed 108 came up today for cheap and it was only 20 minutes away. the vise has 8” jaws and weighs in at 282 lbs. I’ve been searching for one of these for quite a while and I’m proud to add it to my collection. The vise is...

Genog, thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Every once in a while I’ll strip the paint off of an old vise and it has that raw steel look. This would be great to give it more of an old time patina look. I’m going to try this color and see what happens.

That’s a great idea using Watch oil. I just looked it up and you are correct, it’s boiled linseed oil based. My question to you is how well does It dry. After giving it a few days to cure will the color come off on a rag if you wipe it down? I use BLO a lot and once fully dry it’s like varnish.

You did a great job cleaning the vise up. It looks like it’s in lightly used condition and the natural finish really suits it. The vise is from the early 20’s so it’s right around 100 years old.

Thanks VA. I always have an eye out for these but they never seem to come my way then I got four in six weeks, I was pretty happy. Your 2000’s and the #20 make a great photo and they all look really clean. I’m hoping to find those as well someday.

I’ve been on a bit of a hot streak with Parker vises in the last six weeks. I found 4 Parker 492-1/2” vises and they all have the original black paint and off white lettering. These have 2-1/2” wide jaws and all four are almost identical. Having the original wrenches is also quite rare..
