Finally bought a drill press - Craftsman 103.23141 with Vari-slo

I completely disassembled the table lift and re-packed the gearbox with fresh grease. It takes a little bit of effort to start cranking the handle, but after that initial push it works very smoothly.

Slow speed attachment for Craftsman Drill Press

The bearing has a press fit on its inner race around the shaft and a slightly looser fit on the outer race where the bearings fit into the pulley. I started by pressing the shaft out of the pulley which pushed out one of the bearings. Once the shaft was out, one of the bearings stayed in the...

Finally bought a drill press - Craftsman 103.23141 with Vari-slo

I got the belts from McMaster Carr. They are 1/2" wide v-belts 17", 20", and 21" long. I also replaced vari-slo bearings and cleaned the shafts and pulleys really well. There was a thick layer of 50-year old solidified grease there. Vari-Slo Belt model numbers are: 4L170, 4L200, 4L210 Vari-Slo...

Finally bought a drill press - Craftsman 103.23141 with Vari-slo

So, a little over a year later I finally finished overhauling the drill press, put it back together and got it running. The members of this board have been of tremendous help in wiring up the motor. The overhaul involved the following: Disassemble and clean everything Replace quill and spindle...

Connecting stator windings Craftsman 1-phase capacitor start motor 110v

It's alive! It's alive! After several months I finally found enough motivation to work on the motor again. I replaced the wiring using plenty of solder and heat-shrink tubing, and assembled the motor following the instructions in this post...

Connecting stator windings Craftsman 1-phase capacitor start motor 110v

    I'm sorry about the confusion. I double checked the resistance readings this morning (duplicates removed): Yellow <-> #4 = 7.3 Red <-> Green = 1.5 Red <-> #2 = 1.5 Green <-> #2 = 0.6

Thank you very much! Only if it's not too much trouble.

Connecting stator windings Craftsman 1-phase capacitor start motor 110v

This motor came with the drill press I purchased a few months ago and when I took it apart for cleaning and bearing replacement, I did not fully label the wires going from stator to the terminals. I could use some help in figuring out how to connect the stator windings. Below are some photos and...

Finally bought a drill press - Craftsman 103.23141 with Vari-slo

Joe, You're right about the vari-slo handle. Seeing the amount of dirt on the drill press I decided to take it apart and clean and lube everything. So the vari-slo will come off eventually and will be cleaned. Right now I'm at the column removal stage :-(.

Finally bought a drill press - Craftsman 103.23141 with Vari-slo

I've been looking for a vintage US-made drill press for a long time and my patience has finally paid off. I'm really thankful to everyone on this board who has patiently answered my questions about buying a used DP. I found this floor model Craftsman drill press on CL for $75, about 10 miles...

No threaded hole for grounding wire in outlet box

Today I finally opened the box with my new television and it had a two-prong plug. For now I'm not going to worry about installing a grounded receptacle in the outlet. Thanks a lot everyone for your advice!

No threaded hole for grounding wire in outlet box

I was going to plug a tv and a home theater to the outlet in question. My understanding is that a GFCI receptacle won't protect the electronics without a ground connection.

No threaded hole for grounding wire in outlet box

I live in an older apartment and I would like to replace a 2-prong receptacle in one of the outlets with a grounded 3-prong receptacle. The outlet box is grounded via armored BX cable (after connecting a multimeter between the outlet box and the hot cable I see 120V). The problem is that the...

Old Soviet Socket Set. Anyone seen this kit?

I have a strong suspicion that the "H" logo stands for "Новосибирский инструментальный завод" - Novosibirsk Tool Factory. I found their website and it looks like they still make the "driver's toolkit #4a" :-). http://www.niz.ru/caralog.html?page=shop.browse&category_id=48

uart, Could you please post a close-up photo of the label on the inside lid? I'm wondering if there might be manufacturer's info on the bottom.

Angle grinder w/ wire cup brush safety precautions

I recently bought a 4 1/2" angle grinder to use with a wire cup brush or wire wheel to clean the old paint and rust from my Hein Werner jack. I've never used an angle grinder before and I had a few questions, mainly about safety. How closely must the wire cup brush RPM rating match the RPM of...

Auto repair shops in Hong Kong

I recently traveled to Hong Kong and took some photos of car/motorcycle repair shops. The shops are generally very small, about the size of a 2-car tandem garage. The repairs are typically performed at the curb, or sidewalk for scooters/motorcycles. The technical level of mechanics whom I...
