Most of the one's I've seen can be wired @ 120 or 240 (I have some for sale that can be wired @ 120/208/240/277).
Word of advise though. Don't run a 400W @ 120. The amp draw is massive @ 120

Yeah, they are pretty rigid. I ship somewhere around 10 containers a day (through the Port of Oakland) and have welded on them many times (when they show up with holes in them). I'm sure something could be worked out though with interior bracing (of the cut open container).

In all seriousness, check with your local building department as I'm sure those haven't been engineered for the purpose you've intended here, especially after hacking them apart.
I have a miller 140 (110v). It does ok, but is limited in it's abilities.
Advice - buy all the welder you can afford, but do so in a 220V version. If I had it to do over again, I would buy a 220V machine.
I picked up the bottom box about a month ago. With a little work (sign up for the HF club) you can get the bottom box for about $320. I paid $349.99 as I got a coupon in the mail for it and my local HF was out of the "Club" paperwork.
