    Newb question SS TIG

Bobhdus When you say ( to touch off on) you are talking about ending the weld or the start of the weld? I have heard the thinner the metal is the easier the tungsten will stick to it. btw thanks for the info guys I am probably going to buy a SS TIG today or this week. I have also seen on Mr...

    Newb question SS TIG

Hmm I guess that is good news but I'm not sure if 16 gauge is thin enough. I do not weld thin materials on a regular basis nor do I weld all that often however every time there is something that breaks that I need to weld it is always to thin to even attempt to weld it. All I have is a fluxcore...

    Newb question SS TIG

I was curious about how thin can one weld with a scratch start TIG? I just basically want the capability to be able to weld thin stuff such as 1/16th thick or so. I know that the scratch start ignition can be a bit lets say bothersome however what I am worried about is what would it be like to...

    Surface Plate purchase question.

Kevin54- You know the spray wax sounds like a really good idea. I used to be an auto reconditioner and we used to use that spray wax a lot with a ball of clay. Spray wax can clean and leave a really nice finish, it is not as slippery as regular waxes, I might give that a shot.

    Surface Plate purchase question.

macgee - Thank you, that black screech doesn't seem to be a scratch as far as there being an indentation on it. When I rub my fingers on it you feel nothing protruding or indenting so I think I'm ok. ============================================================= "Do you see any wear spots...

    Surface Plate purchase question.

Adam thank you for that response. I have tried asking or figuring out what you just mentioned about the accuracy of a cylinder from a bed that is flat to .001 and I never got a clear answer before. I read yesterday that some guy who calibrates the plates uses gojo so I might give it a shot til...

    Surface Plate purchase question.

Larry- Thanks I just wonder why HP would use a grade AA for a stand when they could get a cheaper one but I get what you are saying and the plate could have had many different jobs during it's life at the shop. Adam- It does have the three feet at the bottom and it stands level since my bench...

    Surface Plate purchase question.

Sorry I forgot to say how much I paid for it. It cost me $75 bucs and a one hour drive to go get it. I was either going to buy this Enco 24x18x4 with ledges (http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?PMAKA=640-0142&PMPXNO=951630&PARTPG=INLMK3) but then I saw this Starrett one on Craigslist...

    Surface Plate purchase question.

I just purchased a used Starrett 24x18x6 pink crystal grade AA surface plate which brand new it is certified to be within a 0.000075 tolerance. It has five times better the wear resisting qualities of the dark granite versions. Now, I do think I got a good deal but I do feel a few tiny little...

    Shed Build Construction

Nice build I like it a lot. I would like to extend my shed one day or just build a new one even though mine is fine it is a bit to small for my needs. Good luck. Can someone help explain with what Mandres mentioned about the pressure treated sills as the base for the floor I can't seem to...

    Talk to me about betonite

This thread was a good read. I first learned about bentonite clay from metal casting. It is used in green sand to form molds about 8%-10% of bentonite is mixed with sand and some water and you have yourself some green sand. You could mess around with the clay yourself on a smaller scale. Once...

Fire pit for the campground made from 16" I-beams

That is an awesome fire pit/barbeque grill. I like the size it must be perfect for gatherings. Some fireclay mixed with sand would create a good refractory to act as a hotface and it would hold the heat in better so you would save on wood. Good Luck

Project: Body Dropped Shopping Cart Welding Cart

Are people seriously complaining about a shopping kart? You can get shopping karts by driving threw the streets. They are abandoned all the time everywhere in the cities of this country. I don't understand how people point the finger but on the other hand don't protest against the government and...

    Splicing Copper w/Aluminum?

Sweet that is a bunch of good information from all you guys. I agree that the extra step should be taken for good quality I just hope it is dipped into a tin bath because that would be a lot of manual labor. EOC Jason I have a bunch of those cords as well. My electronic skills are newb-par. For...

    Splicing Copper w/Aluminum?

Thanks guys you are 100% right! I removed the plug prongs and noticed a copper tint on the edges of the wires. So back in the day they used copper plated with tin. Why take the extra step? Wouldn't that create more work? This motor is old because it says Sears Roebuck & Co., on the back plate...

    Splicing Copper w/Aluminum?

I have an electric motor which has a mix of copper and I assume aluminum wire. It is an old craftsman motor. I wanted to splice the copper cord I have with the beginning part of the motor's power cord and then run the copper cord out threw the housing, instead of removing the entire cord which...

I have given up... We can't do it...

It kills me the fact that you could do all those things if we didn't have such a destructive economy. The prices per items have never changed. Inflation keeps on inflating while people keep on adapting to harder and harder times, what happens when we cannot adapt to our financial circumstances...
