The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Hey there, I did some experimenting with friction slides on my Snap on box and found that parrafin wax was the winner. The dry graphite made a mess, didn't slide great and ultimately was voted off the island[emoji14] For the ball bearing drawers in my Harbor frieght box I used Super lube in...

Twin Piston Caliper Piston Compressor Tool

Sage advice... a good visual inspection of your parts is always job 1. Your eyes are great tools! Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

Twin Piston Caliper Piston Compressor Tool

A c clamp, a chunk of wood or the old brake pad works fine for the GM dual piston calipers. Opening the bleeder and catching the old fluid in a pop bottle or bleeder cup will make it easier too. Of course if you're a rust belt person, opening a bleeder is an exercise in frustration sometimes...

Vintage Snap on restorations 1st post!

Sounds like you're doing way nice work! Drop some pictures our way, I'd love to see how it looks.. Did you prime the drawers inside and out? I fear the bottom chest is going to need all the drawers primed and painted inside and out. The rust, dents and general crud peeled a lot if the paint...

Long Reach Pliers Set. Does it Belong in Every Tool Set?

Ling reach pliers are not live with out itdms, but I love having them for odd jobs at the house and for cars. The long reach side cutters are my favorite tools they cut just about anything ! Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

Blocke : I got the Rustoleum Safety Red at Lowes, they have cans, quarts and gallons. It's cheaper to use the quart or gallon to get the paint you'll need. There is a guy on here that painted a Snap On taco cart with something like 50 cans of spray paint! I used the Rustoleum rusty metal primer...

Vintage Snap on restorations 1st post!

"Progress" today.. scrubbing out the bottom chest and it's filthy drawers. I bought some LA's Awesome cleaner at my local Ollies discount store (1.89/bottle!). This stuff kicks a**! Cleaned the drawers up nicely, with not too much scrubbing. The top chest is sanded and I riveted the lid back...

My Snap On KRA-637/657 Roller Cab Restoration

Yucky, it's amazing how many people "customize" old tool boxes, to varying degrees of success.. My last boxes came from a retired diesel tech and they smelled like the fueling island at a truck stop. Pressure washing barely made a dent in the grease..scrubbing with Simple Green and Pine Sol...

My Snap On KRA-637/657 Roller Cab Restoration

Cool deal.. I guess the black trim was part of the Pride of America package. The trim is crimped on the drawers if it's like my boxes, it will come off with some persuasion. I soaked the drawers in PB Blaster, let them sit for a few days.A putty knife and a hammer was the winner in...

    Service upsell?

GM for one, I'm more familiar with their products, but with the DI engines everyone has now and their carboning problems, things may have changed since then. I'll pull the bulletin #s tomorrow. My take is that if someone is selling the latest and greatest magic potion, somebody will buy it...

Which Dual Action (DA) Orbital for polishing cars?

I bought a Harbor Freight. The HF pad is ok but I have seen a lot of folks on the detailer forums swapping out the backing plate with one for better foam pads. For the price it's a pretty sturdy machine and runs smooth. Sent from my KFSOWI using Tapatalk

    Service upsell?

These services seem like a waste of money and and many OEM'S discourage "induction" services. Name brand fuel, no fill ups while the truck is at the station a bottle of Chevron Techron even once in a while, that's it for me. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

    Vintage Snap On Tool box

Re: Vintage Snap On Tool box (update with pics on resto 4/4/15) Nice box! I have been messsing with old boxes this summer and you really need to pack your patience to make them turn out well. I intend on using and enjoying my boxes as well, it makes you feel good when you open a drawer and it...

    WTB - Vintage KR537D and KR557D

The other factor to consider is to look for parts availibilty. I've contacted Snap On for hinges for the KR537 and drawer slides. The extremely helpful rep has searched this stuff out and it's getting rare in their inventory. I have slides coming but the hinges for the top cover are out of...

    WTB - Vintage KR537D and KR557D

If you've got bodywork skills (I sure as hell don't! ) look for some beater boxes, they are out there. It's a lot more work than scuffing and rattle can painting but it's satisfying to see it come together. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk

Need advice on strut coil spring compressor

Yeah its about the most dangerous thing I've ever seen in a shop.. well.. there was that one time when the guy next stall over was smoking a cigarette draining a gas tank in a 5 gallon bucket.. Anyway with almost 100% coverage for quick change struts it doesn't make sense to monkey around...

Need advice on strut coil spring compressor

No thanks to that! When I was in tech school one of the "hotshot" mechanic wannabes(the ones who know everything and nothing all at the same time) in my class sent a Taurus strut spring flying past my head, embedding itself in a concrete wall across the shop. From that day on, I had a full...

Need advice on strut coil spring compressor

I hate all of these "DIY" compressors with a passion. Finnicky, dangerous jobs like that are best left to pro grade tools. My advice is build the price of paying for swapping over the struts at a shop/parts store or to price ready mount struts for the job. The side work can't be profitable...
