    Sandblast Cabinet lighting

I used 2 Harbor Freight 1000 lumen lights (SKU # 57945) mounted in the top of my homemade blast cabinet. I sandwiched a piece of 1/8" clear Lexan under the lights to keep them protected. They're plenty bright. One mistake I made was mounting them in the hinged lid. When opening the lid...

    Dad or Grandpa Mcguyver moment

I don't think it was intentional. They had a room full of engineers, scientists (including the old guy) and grad students (and one 15 year-old w/ a learner's permit who got to go on the trip so he could help with the drive from Boston). All scratching their heads and speculating what...

    Dad or Grandpa Mcguyver moment

One of my favorite "Grandpa Wisdom” stories… Summer 1980, my father, a mechanical engineer, designed a large rotor for performing gravitational loading on tectonic mud for the University of Houston. Basically, it was a 3’ diameter shallow stainless pan what would be filled with deep-core...

    Compressor in a new garage

Put the compressor on a riser stand, tall enough that you can put a vertical pipe and valve under the compressor tank. Slope the line back toward the compressor and "T" into the vertical pipe. If you want, you can add an automatic drain in place of the valve.

    Compressor in a new garage

Spend a few extra bucks and use stainless for the buried section, and slope it toward a drain valve.

LED Shop Lights for Basement Gym

I agree with Shiftless, 6500K's are going to be very bright. Consider that in the course of working out, you'll be on your back from time to time, and staring directly at the lights. In my basement workout space, I have 3 - 4' long 4800K lights and I think they're still too bright. The...

    Bending 22 gauge aluminum

Should not be a problem. Do you know the alloy? Either 6063 or 6061 will be tougher to bend and might want to develop cracks. Chances are at 22ga the material is 3003, which bends easily. Do you have a plumber's torch? Use a Sharpie marker and make a line along the bend line. Then...

How many of you buy duplicates of the same type of tool and what do you do with them?

I have the full compliment of tools out in the barn/workshop (180' from the back of the house), and have been compiling tools in a decent sized tool chest in the garage (that's attached to the house). When working on something in the house, and I find that I needed to go out to the barn for...

Welding two nuts inline- how to w/o binding?

When you reference "binding", do you mean the threads were buggered due to welding, or that the two nuts were not clocked correctly to allow the bolt to turn though both nuts at the same time? A few years ago, I designed a purpose-built vise for a weld fixture, and to ensure the nuts were...

SUPER Thin Wall 14mm Spark Plug Socket Needed - Anyone with a lathe? Will pay!

Have you considered one of those throw-away stamped steel sparkplug wrenches, the type you get for free with lawn mower sparkplugs. These POS items have helped me out a few times.

How do you haul your welding bottles ?

Just lay them in the bed of the pickup, rolled to one side, and ball up a shop towel under the inside edge to prevent them from rolling. As a qualifier, I get the tanks for free from where I work, and it's a very short drive (6 miles) to and from.

    Air Lines....black pipe....

I did an air loop (actually, it's more of a "U", 18' x 24' x 30') using 1/2 black pipe. I used yellow pipe sealant at all joints. In hind site, I should have used tape and better quality sealant, but after tightening a few connectors, it doesn't have any leaks. Also, in hind site, I...

Pliers; How Many Is Too Many?

When the drawer won't close...you got too many. Kidding aside, despite the quantity shown here, I typically use the same pair 95% of the time (and they were obviously in use when I took the picture because their spot is the 3rd slot from the left side of the drawer).

    Dust collection setups !!

I use a homemade cyclonic separator and it's definitely a benefit. Sorry, no pictures. I made it by making pie cuts in a 55 gallon steel drum, creating a cone that reduces from the drum diameter to a 6" opening in about 30". For the collector itself, I repurposed a 10" impeller drum top...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Daughter Imagineer asked if I could come up with something to make it easier for her to clean the covered chicken run . . . so I present, the Coop Poop Super Scoop! I rummaged the bins of scrap materials and found some perforated stainless (from a retired powder coat oven) and some tubing (from...

    Teflon liner MIG gun questions

Yes, I regularly drill out welding tips (or at least use a tip size larger than the wire). Probably because I buy cheap wire...I find that it's not always round and sometimes is larger than the stated diameter. This is especially true for aluminum. I hold the drill bits using a pin vise...

    Teflon liner MIG gun questions

I doubt the problem is the liner. Try using a larger diameter electrode tip, or drilling out the existing one. FWIW, to avoid feed problems using my spool gun with .035" 5356 wire, I'll drill out the electrode with a #57 (.043") or #56 (.047") drill.

Keeping your woodwork and metalwork areas separate

I suffer from the same problem. Relatively small shop (24'x32') that serves double duty for woodworking and metal work/welding. Honestly, I've given up on trying to keep the two activities separated...simply not enough room. Since woodworking activities create most of the problem, what I...
