What's the best tool you've ever bought?

The more tools I have, the more I want to try. Lathe? Need a mill. MIG? need a TIG. Jack? Need a lift. It's like a never ending loop and the best tool EVER is the next one.

    WM Johnson Tools

I just found these beauties in the bottom of an old carpenter's box I bought. The level of attention to how they were made is impressive. Notable that they look similar to the Athol design, but clearly not manufactured there and they're quite a bit nicer than the Peck, Stow ones I've found. They...

    Grip Edge drivers

Confession: I buy cheap sets of torx bits and hammer progressively larger torx sockets into the fastener until it breaks loose. Grip edge might be the greatest thing since sliced bread but the price is just not going to do it for me since I can keep buying inexpensive torx sets or eventually...

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT 24x20 Maximalist (hoarder) garage addition.

I had to take a picture of the basement workbench because a sizeable chunk of the metallic planes in the collection were out on display. I'm trying to thin the herd and in reality, a man only needs like 3 bench planes (not me, but some men... probably). I do need to get rid of duplicate sizes...

2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

I've hit up a few auctions recently and got some cool stuff, but this was a good one even for me. It was about $150 total, a 2000 degree oven ($85), another (somewhat beat up but 80% complete) Emmert pattern maker's vise ($55), and a 30 inch crown logo c-man tool box full of cool old junk...

Tool set in blow molded case, recommendations please

It has to be. To build a utilitarian kit with even passable versions of all those tools is going to be huge money, no one will buy a quality kit except the handful of professionals who know the difference between an $8 set of pliers and a $30 set of pliers, or the military who doesn't care about...

    Show us your handplanes

I already found a correct small wheel in my stash but don't throw it out! All the hardware and furniture are Stanley parts, the only parts that aren't are the lever cap and lateral adjuster. If you don't feel the need to hoard it, I'd gladly pay the shipping using pirate ship.

    Show us your handplanes

I can’t part out a wards master, I love those! I have a stash of parts from planes that turned out to have cracked soles.

Estate sale 606C. If you’re cold they’re cold, bring them in (to your collection), needs some work on the adjuster wheel, but I should have one of those in the hoard. I always seem to find the 6s and never the 4 1/2 I want.

Gearwrench Warranty in Australia - Is Gearwrench still considered a quality product?

I don't know if GW/Apex has any distribution rules in Australia, but I have lots of brands I sell that do have exclusive distributors in Australia to protect their them from competition. Assuming their costs are similar to mine, their markups are pretty healthy. As for the Apex tools, (in my...

    Building a work bench

If you're dead set on building them, I wouldn't invest in heavy gauge tube unless you're building a welding table, boxed .080 wall would be fine in my uneducated opinion. For what it's worth, I used these and they worked great. I ended up selling the bench for the price of the legs when I moved...

WTB R8 beginner tooling. Endmills, collets, facemill, vise, etc.

I just inherited a sieg X2 mini-mill with an R8 spindle and rather than spend my life savings at shars, i'd rather pick up any extras someone might have laying around. I need basically everything, I don't even have a set of parallels. Import junk preferred, I'm trying to ball on a budget.

Is there a master list of Vise Grips out there?

If you find something else not on the list, post it here or we can start another thread in the vintage tools forum.

Is there a master list of Vise Grips out there?

Updated! It's starting to feel late to get in on the ground floor collecting these. The rare ones are starting to command prices that are much less fun than say 2020 or so. Model Number Description 310R 10" straight-jaw bar-clamp locking pliers 310S 10" straight-jaw bar-clamp w/ swivel...

    Files for sharpening hand saws?

The issue there is that "hardpoint saws" have a different geometry than the old timey stuff (they're sorta like the japanese pull saws). Personally, all my crosscut panel saws are modern hardpoints as they kick the **** out of my old collector saws (Disstons and Simonds). The only old saws that...

Who makes a good quality engine hoist?

If you have the money, these from AC Hydraulic are really nice. The legs are super low profile and fit into most pallets (and below lots of control arms).

2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

It looks like Mack used the "1832" oval logo up until 1923 from my quick research. So far they're a nice set of chisels that won't end up in the giant box of "chisels I'll get to some day."

2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

I bought a large lot of neat stuff, but this set of chisels was in the bottom of an old Kennedy 1022 box. I think no one else spotted the set of chisels because I got it for $25. The previous owner must have been a craftsman of some sort as they're well worn, but the backs are flat and it came...

    But.....air tanks don't actually blow up......right?

Shipping is a killer too. You should see the FOB price on a metal tool box full of air.
