2025 Garage Sale Thread (14th Annual)

Couldn't reach for my wallet fast enough at $50! I already had most of this set in two smaller Craftsman Kromedge kits but this beast has the elusive 12-20 (Stanley guys will recognize that thread). [Edit: it does NOT have the 12-20 tap/die, darn it) Still, I wanted one of these so bad when I...

What to do with tools that just don't sell?

It feels like Market Place listings don't have the reach they used to, possibly to get you to "boost" the listings by paying. Generally, I just keep dropping the price till I get any interest and take the first offer if it's something I need gone.

Vintage Buck Bros Gouge - Trash?

As everyone else mentioned, incannel and honestly, nearly ready to go. I can't get gouges "shaving sharp" but I make sure the back is polished, then hit it with a fine norton slip stone, then touch the bevel side on a buffer and they cut fine. It doesn't take much at all and these are probably...

Unpopular opinion - mayhew prybars are just ok

Are they the glossy red handle ones? I have that set and I thought they were Wilde. I do like them, there's just a nice feel to them compared to others I've used.

Stanley sockets at Walmart, early 2000's

I remember this and still have a 1/4" set. They were well made and the price was great. I wish they would have kept going with this tack rather than buying Craftsman and shitting it up. Now Walmart has their own brands that are halfway decent and they can sorta compete with HF at the price...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

After posting in this thread for the first time I got to thinking about the other vises I have laying around and the all purpose “garage vise” turns out to be a rare bird. In fact, I present the only picture of a Simplex 41sj (swivel jaw) on the internet (that isn’t the simplex catalog). Freshly...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I got curious, I couldn't find many good images of them in production, but here are a few of some pattern shops with the vises in action. If you're into therbligs and work flow, these pictures are a treat.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

That's amazing! I have twin Fulton 10" wood working vises I was going to arrange exactly that way, I find I constantly plane 4' stock and it's a pain. I was going to put them between 3 and 4 feet apart. I also have a narrow bench like that currently but it's up against a wall, using it as an...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Ah sorry, I'm talking about the K13 tilt plate that lets the front jaw (which only tilts on a horizontal plane) tilt on a vertical plane. The "mount plate" is fine but a little stiff. I'm not sure if the K13 was optional or not, but it's nearly always missing at least in the ones I've seen after...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

I'm not much of a vise nerd (more of a chronic vise abuser) but this is the one vise I've been on a long quest for. It's an Emmert K1 pattern maker's vise and looks to be a "U5" post WW2 iteration. I lucked out at an auction where it was listed simply "pattern vise" and only 1 or 2 other bidders...

    Snap On tools

This is the unfortunate truth. If you do a consignment auction, the auction house is going to spend as little effort as possible. If you sell as a whole collection, you'll get pennies on the dollar. The highest return will be to list the part numbers individually or in small sets on ebay, but if...

    The collecting bug...

I try to collect by one rule, buy low, never sell. I very much try to pay 25% or less of what something typically goes for on ebay unless it's something I really need. When I croak, hopefully the proceeds of selling my junk surprises the family with a few thousand bucks. They have strict orders...

    Favorite Nitrile Gloves?

+1 for the SAS Raven 7mil. I use them on the car and in the camper.

    Show us your handplanes

It's cool enough to have a 51 AND the shooting board but for it to be a family heirloom is amazing.

    They are. Work great.

    Sawstop patent evergreening?

That's the new patent application. The old patent merely called it a detection circuit, the new patent is for a brushed contact between the blade/arbor to get the signal to the controller/powertool. Dumb question, but if that's how the saw operated before this patent, doesn't that mean that it...

    Sawstop patent evergreening?

They use most of the exact same line art. The only thing different is the language in the initial claim as @ericm pointed out.

    Sawstop patent evergreening?

I don't know anything about patents, but it looks like this recent patent application: https://patents.google.com/patent/US20240255101A1 is the same as the infamous "840 patent" which looks to have finally expired? https://patents.google.com/patent/US9724840B2/en Does anyone know much about...

Gearwrench sockets - Taiwan or China

I'm not 100% sure if Apex manufacturers themselves in Taiwan but they have a lot of tools with Taiwan as the Country of Origin. The thing is, they have socket sets with both countries as the COO (and India) so I could easily see them selling a full socket set from either country but according to...

    Show us your handplanes

Ah ok, I was talking about the 45 type planes. The Stanley 55 and Sargent 1085 definitely had the wooden molding planes in their sights. I can get the 55 to make molding, but the wood has to be A+ clear and straight and I have to cut with the grain or it's a disaster. I think the wooden molding...
