    propane tanks

3x100 vs 500 is a similar price, however 500 required substantial offset from the building...didn't want a tank sitting in the middle of my yard. I could put the 100s right up against the building.

    propane tanks

75K will burn just under 1gal/hour (assuming 91,333 BTU/gal) of actual heater burn time. 100lb holds about 24 gallons...so you only get 24 +/- hours of actual run time per fill You can purchase 100gal tanks and have propane companies come and fill on site. I paid $1600 for 3x100gal tanks last...

    Heating Options - 42x40x14 plus loft (40x11x7)

I put 150K heater in my 44x48x14 garage. I have 3 large garage doors that do have some leakage at the edges. Heats from 40 to 60 pretty quickly. My Modine 150K heater has no such warning. It says "Heaters are designed for use in heating applications with ambient startup temperatures between...

Just received my permits to build a 'real' garage

Parts of barn are unheated and uninsulated... Condensant bubble 'insulation' under roof steel just done for expediency.

that "conditioned" statement is if you are insulating the top of the trusses...not the bottom chord. There is also bubble insulation between the purlins and roof steel. Moot point now LOL

Just received my permits to build a 'real' garage

Re: Just received my permits to build a 'real' garage (48x44) Short answer...no. There's a big debate on vapor barriers on attics of pole barns. First, there isn't cold steel on the immediate backside of the insulation for moist air to condense on. Second, the steel ceiling liner is nearly...

Just received my permits to build a 'real' garage

Got the attic insulated. put 2 ea 22" wide rafter vent baffles between each truss (stapled to the purlins) then packed R30 underneath to seal the area and close off the top of the headers. Then blew in R42 in the entire area. Pic attached of the baffles and the upper garage area completed.

Just received my permits to build a 'real' garage

Heat is hooked up and working!!! 3x100gal propane tanks installed. Will gauge propane use over the winter and potentially add a fourth tank next year if needed. Even with no ceiling insulation (yet) the heater warmed up the area to 55-60*F (36* ambient temp). Didn't have to run non-stop...

Just received my permits to build a 'real' garage

Some progress. 200A Electrical rough in mostly done. Started putting in 3/4" foam board along the girts to act as a draft break. Also putting in horizontal 2x6 "studs" on 24" centers to allow R19 insulation to go in next then the steel wall panels. Blowing in R38-44 in the attic as well...

Power...how much do I really need

I'm also in MD and finishing up a 44x60 pole barn. Do you need to go panel to panel? You can split at the meter and run dedicated service to the barn... I'm in the process of having my house feed upgraded to 350-400A to have dedicated 150A in the house (already there) and a 200A direct feed...

Just received my permits to build a 'real' garage

More progress today. Got the heater vent pipe done (Nothing like cutting a hole in a perfectly good roof), wired up the low temp thermostat, and put in an interior "band board" around the inside to attach the receptacle boxes to. Hopefully electrician will make it this week to start rough in...

Just received my permits to build a 'real' garage

Dug the 200ft trench from the house to the garage yesterday. Today I got all of the lights hung and the Modine 150K BTU heater mounted. The exhaust pipe is up to the attic, just need to get it through the roof and install the silicone boot flashing and weather cap.
