I'm definitely liking the carport... and it looks like you've found the perfect location for the "gas pump"! Is the "face" of the pump painted... or??? Anyways, looks good. IIRC, it has storage inside? I've been looking for a similar metal "cabinet"... you had an awesome idea there! ...D

Above 1200 Sq/FT Zeph's Quasi WWII Era Shop

Just looked at the first pic again... that may be a Singer... As far as the drive through liquor stores... Wyoming still has them... lol Not only that, many bars had (a few still do) a drive-up window. There, not only could you drive up and buy a sixer... you could also get a mixed drink...

Nice looking machine and it's cool that you know the history! The thing about buying a machine that was used by industry is that you can (rightly) assume they were well maintained. And, I'm sure the gentleman who rescued it did the same. The older machines will last several lifetimes with...

Good to hear your surgery went well and your physical therapists, apparently, haven't tried to kill you... yet. I had shoulder surgery in '12 and there were days when I wasn't really sure if the therapists were trying to help me... or... Anyways, good to see you back in the shop and posting...

Yeah... I tried driving screws without pilot holes. While it was possible, it required LOTS of effort... even with the lighter weight steel. So, pilot holes were the answer. Anyways, progress is GREAT!! And, I'm liking the color scheme... the gas station is gonna be kick a$$! ...D

Hey Rian, Great progress on the roof and structure! As far as the screws go... did you get self tapping... or self drilling?? There is a difference. When I installed the siding on my barn, I chose self tapping screws (because I liked the appearance better) even though it meant drilling...

Is this a 2 knife cutterhead? If so, that could account for a bit of chatter. Sharp knives and a slower, steady feed will help... ...D

Yep... you've got it... Even using a straightedge, it's important to set the cutter height for all the knives at the same location... as it pertains to rotation. Seems like a manual I had with a jointer long ago mentioned rotating the cutterhead back and forth to find the highest spot (this is...

Hmmm... was just thinking... I can adjust the height of both the infeed and outfeed tables on my jointer. Yours may not have an adjustment for the outfeed. For my jounter, the blade height is somewhat arbitrary. Point being, if the height of your outfeed table is fixed, the blades will need...

Congrats on the find! If its loud with a marginal cut, means the knives are dull. Its best if you have a dial indicator... Check the height of the knives before removing and make a note of that measurement. Then, use the indicator to set the sharpened (new?) knives... be sure to check side to...

Trying to decide which 6" x 48" Belt / Disc Sander to buy.

Depends on what you plan to use the machine for... Years ago, I bought a Delta "Sanding Center". It has a 1 hp, 3450 rpm motor... can't remember what the belt speed is but, its great for woodworking. The shop I later worked at had an older Rockwell belt/disc sander... 6" x 48" belt and 12"...

Machinist...how do you know the feed rate of your mill table?

Sounds like you know this but... 2 flute for aluminum... As was mentioned, turn the speed down... and watch chip evacuation Dry cutting various aluminum alloys can be a bit tricky... gaulling is a common problem. We used to fly through 6061... on a cnc with FLOOD coolant Depending on how...

Machinist...how do you know the feed rate of your mill table?

I used to tell my students to catch a chip and measure it... the inserts we were using wanted about a .006" chip load. Fairly easy to put some science to that. Once you've made enough chips, you'll get to know what looks, sounds and "feels" right. ...D

    Pole Barn Leaks and Advice

I repaired the roof on my garage this past spring. Similar situation... I had leaks in 6 places. I went through and used my Milwaukee cordless impact driver to check/re-torque every screw. I think i may have added a dozen or so additional screws and replaced a couple dozen that were spinning...

    Screws or nails?

Re: Screws or mails? I've read and re-read... maybe it's just me... Having a bit of a problem figuring this out... Regardless how the plywood is fastened, we seem to be missing the better part of 3 sheets... 20' long. 11' high = 220 sq/ft A 4' x 8' sheet of ply = 32 sq/ft x 5 sheets = 160...
