    High quality fractional dial caliper?

Why are you unable to see that people may want to do things differently than you? Is my way wrong, simply because it's not how you do it? Are you my ex-wife?

    High quality fractional dial caliper?

Not everybody has the same thought process. Some people excel at music or art, while other folks can deal with a rack of carburators and an Italian V12. There's frequently more than one way to arrive at the same place. I've worked off and on in machine shops for for over 20 years. I've been a...

    High quality fractional dial caliper?

They are marketed to woodworkers. All the non-woodworkers here will tell you to just use a digital caliper, but they don't seem to understand that woodworking tools are marked in fractions, not decimals. I use digital and dial calipers in my machine shop, and fractional dial calipers in the...

New construction: Kitchen and living areas

Same thing than happens when you drop a can and chip the tile? On the other hand, I've had concrete floors in every garage I've owned. I don't remember chipping them by dropping something small.

    What Ceiling Height?

You failed to mention the one really important thing - what are you doing in the garage? If you're parking, the height doesn't matter. If you're working, it does. If you're heating it, height matters. If not, it doesn't. What works for me is 10' in the garage (parking and some storage) and...

    Help with sink for Garage

I saw a stainless sink with backsplash, and faucet at Costco the other day. It was over your budget, but included a tall wrap around backsplash.

top 5 rules/ideas to keep shop organized.

No shop at the moment, but I'm building a new house & shop. I've designed it to help me stay organized. 1) There's a garage for parking, storage, freezer, water heater, etc. This should allow me to avoid storage or parking in my woodshop or the other shop. 2) Wood only shop, with 8' x 8' doors...

    Sticker Shock 30x40 New Build

I agree with pretty much everything you're saying, except that construction is cheaper in a small town. I live in a small town, and while many things cost less here, construction is super expensive at the moment. I've been trying to get something built for the last few years, and the prices...

    Delta Dye on new floor

Thanks for the reply - I'll give you a call. It's a tough call to pick the colors, and this is going in my house. I may have some practice space in the shop or garage.

    Delta Dye on new floor

Is there a source of photos that are larger than an inch square? I'd ready to throw down the money to do this, but I'm not excited about taking a gamble on the limited information available. Things I've looked at: The Instagram feed, but not many of those photos actually say what colors were...

    Band saw price check?

The open stand units are usually 1/2 horse, and won't be that good for resawing anyway. For a general purpose bandsaw, without really high expectations, that would be a good deal in my part of the country.

Exposed fasteners versus hidden for metal roof

I would not consider exposed fasteners for anything I cared about. Every one of them I've ever worked with leaked. Every. Single. One. I plan to install a standing seam on my new house and shop, and use tabs to hold the fixed end, rather than screw it down directly. I expect to be dead before...

Concrete is pricey - what do I really need for 2-post lift?

I have the same issue as you, and my decision is to pour a 4" 4,000psi slab. However, I'm leaving out the radiant tubes and 1" of insulation in 2 pads that are 5' x 5'. This should give me an extra inch of thickness, so it'll be over 4" even it's a little thin. I'll be able to move the lift...

What is your “I wish I would have during your build...?

I'm about to put standing seam on my roof and have also priced surface screwed metal for the walls and ceiling. The price is about the same. A local guy with a trailer bends it on site, stacks it and drives away for about $1/sq ft.

"Metal Sales" roof panels that HD sells

My local (rural west coast) is $3/lf at 36 wide - $1/sq ft. You can pick it up from the shop, or the guy will bring a trailer and roll it on site for a bit more money. Roofing too.

Has anybody here built their garage THEMSELVES?

I just fired my contractor who has been giving me excuses for too long, and finally gave me a bid that was a complete joke. So, I'm building my own house and shops. 3280 sq ft (880 house and the rest is garage, wood shop and shop). I'll hiring out the excavation, concrete, framing and sheetrock...

Considering two sites for garage - smaller size close to house vs big 400' in back

It's going to depend on what that extra space is worth - in terms of money (it'll be much more expensive) and the pain of walking to the shop for a screwdriver. How badly do you need more than 28 x 40?

How do you handle garage work requests?

I'm happy to share some space, tools and knowledge with friends who understand what I'm offering. People who expect me to open up, demand my services or have nothing to return to me can go pound sand.
