    Lift layout for new garage

Have to look for the code you're under and any local amendments. I had no such restrictions and we have a lot of wind here, 40+MPH in spring not an odd thing. My doors are 3' off the corner, just because it was a convenient measure. The walls use let in diagonal braces, way I build everything...

    Lift layout for new garage

There you go. The 70 is long gone, sold the roller. Pretty eat up and hard to work on. Had to cut down on race cars from 3 to 2.

Upgrading to 3 car garage during construction

Our house garage is 22x21 and my F-150 and something like a Ford Escape leave little room. So depends on your vehicles. My F-350 will just barely fit is a 24' deep shop with the overhead door closed LOL.

    Enclosed trailer upgrades and modifications

Nice trailer We ordered ours outfitted exactly as we wanted. None of that after a while stuff. If I add anything, it would be some E-track to the walls in places. Which I'd hate to do since it's nice carpet. Added some to the floor for various haling configurations (door car or dragster) We...

    Price of osb way up!

The price impact on new construction is listed now at around $20,000/home (median price type on cost, not retail estimate). Covid is only one part, winter and shipping/delivery are also playing apart. Also, from what I read, when we start to pull out of this if demand goes up from either more...

    Lift layout for new garage

I set mine for the cars, not the trucks. The F-150 crew is 19' long, the 93 F-350 is 20' and the 2020 F-350 is 22'. No way to position the lift to move the trucks in my space unless I could live with zero clearance to the overhead door, which I can't. With 30' - sure, easy. 24' - not so...

    Lift layout for new garage

This is where I sat mine in a 24' deep space - about 11 1/2' back from the door. Because everything I lift hangs more out the tail end. PS - IMHO you are wasting valuable wall space with dual 9' doors.

    Tiny Workshop Inspiration

I'm LOLing this because we're contemplating a potential retirement move to New Mexico. But - no tiny shop, 1200 sq/ft minimum is required. It's always interesting to see what people are doing in limited spaces because you can always use good ideas and space is never unlimited. Except for one...

Time to think about manual transfer setup

2nd loss of power in the last two days. This time, most of the city due to ice storm. Have the 6500 running outside and cords holding up the two fridges and the computers. And the coffee pot. Works, but PITA as you can imagine. Panel is a Siemens 200A G3040MB1200CU Has the main 200A 4x...

Electrical parts shortages at big box stores

This, people are generally not aware - well, should be now as COVID exposed the issue - of really how "fragile" our supply chains are. Built a lot around "just in time" "Kanban" style techniques to minimize inventory and supply just what is necessary. Excess capacity is considered wasteful...

Can a pair of 12/2 runs be used instead of a 12/3?

With 12-3, you could do what the electricians did in this house (both bathrooms) for heat/vent/light - they used the neutral as the switch leg for the light and the copper as the neutral/return. No, don't do that. IMHO is you are going to run cable, go buy 12-4 and do it all in one run.

    Buying a lot of lumber

I would say when I built in 2011, McCoy's did a good job of giving me decent pieces when ordering in bulk. I only had issues with some of the longer 2x6x14 rafter pieces having too much twist to wrestle out. Bowing and such in wall studs, if not excessive, can be cured with some blocking as...

    Concrete Prep

The higher the epoxy content of the floor paint, the better IMHO. I used an K-M industrial floor coating that was engineered for less than perfect surfaces. Etched, dried and rolled. 9 years, no problems or lift. Warm drag tires leafe rubber on the floor, no paint lift. Mine was blotchy...

    Truss question. Replace with rafters?

Should not be a problem - see the tail end of my build thread for similar. I raised an area way more than 2'. As "rafter ties" move up from the plate, they will increase the roof loading on the rafters, so be sure you take that into account. IMHO and experience, "collar ties" are virtually...

Weatherhead for Rigid with conductors already in it

Hold up This looks like if you remove the clamp and the face, it should slip over the cable and land on the conduit. If not, cut out the piece between the face and the clamp area.

    DIY Garage Build

Lots of threads in the Garage Gallery showing framing work - including mine. Good place to review. Most are just big dog houses LOL. I did all mine, including decking and roofing. 5/12, 6/12 pitch shouldn't be much of an issue if you're careful. More than that you're very likely going to...

How hard is it to replace a door frame and door?

Not terribly hard, but every one I've done has been a different adventure. And yes, no walls are plumb, no opening square. I re-trimmed out back door inside to match changes to the front door trim when I put the new fancy front in the house. I had to do all kinds of weird little tweaks to the...

    Fall Through Winter Cost Thread

5000w electric, cost - ?, about .099/Kw Hr. Runs when I need it only. I have several 30 gallon propane tanks for a dual burner Mr Heater, but in the last 8 years I haven't needed to use them in the winter. "Cold" is high 20s~low 40s, 960 sq/ft shop will only get below 50F if exterior cold...

Bench Top vs Floor Standing Drill Press

I have a full size floor model 15 speed C-man unit that I've been thinking about doing same. The post re-connector is a nice hack. The square column mill is on a mobile home brew stand, I just don't move it LOL. I should have designed a tool chest into that one. hindsite and all that. I keep...
