    Confused by 602.10

This is how my 16' header looks - final studs added later.

Repair or Replace 8 ton hydro cylinder on engine lift

Have a nice Torin Big Red engine crane. The 8 ton cylinder is leaking down slow under load. I can replace it for under $100, either with a replacement Torin or an HF air assist unit. I suspect it's wore out, having been in use over 20 years. Could be leaking past the bleed down valve, but...

    Shop Trim

Same - use the Hardi. No problems with bees carrying hammers and saws around here, but the Hardi hold paint better and may well get you a discount on insurance.

2x4 vs 2x6 insulated walls in Texas?

I run 2x4 walls with R13 and the ceiling right now is also R13. I can cool the 24x28 work area to low 80s, high 70s with a 10.5K AC unit when it's 105+ outside depending on when I start the unit. I can keep the whole 960 sq/ft building nice with 20K BTU of cooling, and heat it with 17.5K of...

    Alcohol burning fire pit.

In my experience, alcohol - at least methanol - burns pretty clear, not a lot of flame. Nearly impossible to see in the daytime for sure. And methanol fumes are nothing to be trifled with. I have easy 50+ gallons of alcohol sitting around most of the time but I'd look to propane, personally.

Internet service to shop using direct bury fiber optic

I'd go with conduit, at least 2". As for double - meh. Unless you break it during the pull, you'll likely never touch it again. We've got 80,000+ feet in the ground here at work, going on 20+ years and we just pulled another upteen thousand feet through the same 4" runs, upwards of 288...

    Smart Switches

No hub with Kasa and we have a bunch now. I don't see any advantage to a "hub" - the "hub" is in software. I can group, name, etc as I like. Alexa "goodnight" command turns all lights off, etc. Ring equipment doesn't work with much of anything, looks to me. And also looks like you have to...

    Smart Switches

We use Kasa and I'd cut into the line to the floods in the attic and install box+switch. Or the wall, whatever. You don't necessarily need to ever see the switch.

Do you have an air line at your workbench?

I have two ports next to benches. I used the coiled lines, bit of a PITA sometimes but not too bad.

Brake cleaner: Oreilleys vs Advance autos “Wearever” brand

O'Reilly's - I buy it by the case. Cheapest around, works good. Yes, it's bad stuff, so don't spray it on just anything.

I started changing my own oil...

I've thought about doing my own but...It was right at $60 at the DEALER to have the F-350 oil changed. That's 8 quarts and the filter and all I did was stand around. In and out in under an hour. We have no disposal facility in my home city and not in the mood to hunt up jugs to haul it 25...

Attatching a bottom plate to a sill plate?

Unbolt the sill plates, build the walls in sections on the slab and nail the studs to the sills, then stand them back up.

Light switch ground wires not connected

This - our house was build in 2000 to "current code" and I have found a lot of "eh, skip it" type electrical work. And some down right dangerous.

    Dewalt chop saw

Agree with the others - chop saw not the thing for what you describe. I have the HF model 14" and it does just great at less expense. Everything on this lathe bench was cut on the orange chopper: Have you looked here for possible updates to your common 4x6 metal saw -...

Just relocated to DFW and everything is RUSTING

Lived 40+ years in Fort Worth, never had issues with rust as you describe. Granted the RH can be somewhat higher there than west Texas. Spent 4 years in Houston, only minimal tool issues there. +2 on storing chemicals of some sort. Pool chlorine and/or muriatic acid will cause all kinds of...

Couple questions on a small framing issue for a remodel

This, and you're going to want a 2x8~2x8 or so running flat across the area where your valve mounts, so you will have a solid backing for it. Have the valve and instructions on hand so you can set the proper depth in the finished wall.

Central heat/AC units, Heat pump vs AC with elec. Coils?

Heat pump. We saved a ton of power $$$ going from 12.5kW worth of electric heat to a heat pump on 1600 sq/ft. The old AC system needed a 60A breaker just for the heat part of the air handler.

Need advice on best way to insulate ceiling in renovated garage

THe modified roof area over my lift. 2x6 rafters and the "ties", which are not ties but just there to hold the OSB ceiling material. Insulation is R13, 3 1/2".
