    Reminder about working Safely

Guys, be very VERY careful about using a bowline knot. There is one step in tying a bowline that is easy to get wrong and if you do, as soon as weight hits the knot it comes apart. Many firefighters have been injured and killed this way. I much prefer using a form of figure eight when I can...

    Inexpensive thermal image cameras.

The price of some of today's tech just blows my mind. Less than 20 years ago we had a salesman bring a thermal imaging camera to our fire station for a demo. At that time it cost more than $25,000. And, it was a monochrome display.

Bought a drill press. What do I have?

You can usually find those spindle covers on Ebay. Not cheap, but they're there. I've got one waiting to be restored, and it's missing the cover too.

To Seal or Not to Seal - R Panel at Sheeting Ledge

I'm sure this will get comments telling how wrong I am, but I used to put up metal buildings around here for a living. I have NEVER used the sealant on sheet edges and I never had a leak between the sheets. Properly installed, the sheets are going to overlap nearly two inches at a rib and you...

Moving my shop half way across the country... anyone have advice?

Good luck on the move and life-change. I'm not trying to be a total downer, but I hope you realize you're moving to tree-hugger central. You may find putting in that trailer ramp more difficult than you expect. From what I understand from reading threads here, you practically need approval from...

    Machinery & Equipment Catalogs

I might be interested in some Lodge and Shipley information from 1900 to about 1970 if there is any.

My new workshop. What would you do first?

If you are planning on welding in there, I wouldn't cover the walls with peg board. Peg board is extremely conducive to fire due to the venilation caused by all the peg holes.

    How does battery isolator work?

That looks like a master switch to me. It simply disconnects the battery from the vehicle's electrical system. A true battery isolator is a different animal and I honestly can't tell you how those work. LOL

    Clearing and road work

This would probably be the 'Cadillac' for tree and brush grubbing: A friend of mine designed and patented the Grub 'n Rake. I believe he sold a manufacturing license to New Holland for the attachment. He builds and sells them from his shop. My grubber is a bit less eloquent. I built an...

    Plasma Cutter and Brake Cleaner

I clean oil and grease off parts using ether. It evaporates pretty quickly and doesn't leave a residue. Plus, you don't have to worry about phosgene.

    Clearing and road work

You need a grubber. In most soil I can grub trees about as large as a D-4 can push with my LS 180. It's all about leverage.

    Buffalo 15 - Worth?

Most equipment prices vary from area to area. It would help if everybody knew where you were located.

    Brazing with Propane

I have actually seen a couple of old-timers weld thin material with a propane torch. One of them said he much preferred acetylene, but propane would work.

did i overpay for this old tool box?

There's a guy in Illinois that repairs indicators and makes them look and function like new. I can't remember his name right now...Adam Booth (Abom 79) uses him.

need a small lathe and mill recommendation

I've got a Central Machinery (Harbor Freight) 9x20 bench-top lathe that I bought used. It did take a little tuning, but it does an acceptable job on small parts. It's not a bad machine to start with if you don't have a lot of room. I would suggest making the 4 bolt compound base as one of the...

Pawn shop & Tractor Supply score...

I looked at some of those at TSC today. Yes, China made. A friend of mine has a few of the big 'F' clamps and they're not bad. Would be a lot better if the screw was copper instead of steel.

DRIVESITFAR'S TOOL FINDS. SOME ARE JUST COOL AND SOME ARE WTF so please help

If Fruehauf built it, you got a great trailer. I've dragged their trailers all over the U.S. They know how to build them.

    Where to buy carbide inserts

Just curious here...you wouldn't be around the Goldthwaite area, would you? If you precisely measure the critical dimensions on the insert, KBC Tools may be able to help you. I'd get the measurements in standard and metric.
