    Wrenches from the 30’s

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Dannyr, you’re right. I was just checking out Rededa. Great looking vises. Never seen one on this side of the pond. I‘ll have to keep my eyes open, while I’m not dragging across the USA (gas’s too expensive).

    The VISES of Garage Journal

East Coast / West Coast Speed Vise Drag Race Heres a couple of 3” gunsmith vise. The top one is a common Cardinal Speed Vise 3a. Very easy to adjust. Simple is good. Made in LA CA. I have a 6” Cardinal as my go-to on my DP600. IMHO it is the best drill press vise made. The bottom vise is...

    Wrenches from the 30’s

Just picked these up for free from an old Newburyport family. These wrenches came their neighbor. She was widowed, but rather stay home, and mourn her loss, decided to travel. The home is on the bank of the Merrimack river, where she built from scratch a steel hull boat. These tools were...

Age of this Westinghouse motor and Wizard grinder?

The factories in Springfield were purchased by GE in 1910 or so, to produce arms for the Russian Czar. A separate subsidiary was formed, New England Westinghouse , to fulfill the contract. The contract was not renewed after producing 400,000 rifles, and one of the factories was sold. In 1920...

    Porter Cable Planers

Here’s a question for all you PC fans. what is the difference between the PC 126 plane, and the 150? Is one considered better, than the other? TIA. Peter

Age of this Westinghouse motor and Wizard grinder?

Hard to read the label on the motor, but I think I see it was manufactured in Springfield, MA. New England Westinghouse was only producing motors from 1920-1926

Re: The VISES of Garage Journal

Anyone want to give a guess about this vise? Looks like a Bison-ish, adjustable rear jaw, with a foot actuation pedal.

    Interesting Dunlap 5244

There’s a million of these Dunlap 3.5” vise out there, and I have done a lot of searching. Have yet to find another that looks like this. Notice how the Dunlap name is cast into a little cartouche, rather than a tag, or just letters across the body of the vise. Anyone have a clue whether it...

    Delta 1x42 Sander/Grinder GLOAT

I feel like I already won. Actually, the exact same machine, but with the guards, popped up on CList last night for $175. I was too late on the draw, but then again, would lightning strike twice? I don’t know, but I would love to give it another shot Peter

    Delta 1x42 Sander/Grinder GLOAT

Thanks, Tom. It was very unexpected. I have no idea why someone would pay that much, but I am eternally grateful. Personally, I own a Belsaw. Their 1x44 has all metal wheels, and the ability to sharpen a blade with the edge facing you. I hope the new O enjoys it, it’s a great looking machine...

    Delta 1x42 Sander/Grinder GLOAT

Ok. I can’t help it. It’s been a craptacular few weeks. I really need some love/hate. So, if I told you that this was my machine that sold a month ago, would you tell me how much you hate me?

Selling price for a 5" Wilton Bullet vise

IMHO BLOT is better. 50% T (turpentine) gets the BLO to dry a lot faster. Just need to do a couple three coats. I have used tung oil, too. It dries harder, and doesn’t yellow as much. Peter.

I read that Wilton started with the 4” vise. Any idea when the no.3 was introduced? Peter

Wilton Bullet Vise date stamping. show yours with or without EXP on slide

I picked up this no.3 last week. About as early as you get. No stamp. No handled hold downs. No indents. Patent Pend. Smooth jaws. Lime green paint. The handle and acorn nuts are chrome plated. Never seen that before. Is this the first iteration of the bullet? Peter

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Ok. Go easy on me. Looking to buy my first vintage vise (other than the no brainer Bullets I have found) so, I am looking for a reality check, here. I could pick up this Reed 404 1/2 for $175. What sayeth thou, oh lords of visedom?

    Show us your arbor press!

Yes, I live about 20 mi. from their factory. I bought another press, with a broken casting for $100, and its moving parts are all good. I did look at the Greenerd site, and talked to some folks who had inquired into spare parts. They are unbelievably pricy. And rightfully so. These machines...

    Show us your arbor press!

+1 on paint rollers. A lot easier than using grease. The daisy wheel is hard to come by. Of course, you can still buy them from Greenerd, but you might need a bank loan. A gentleman over at OWWM had some made a couple of years ago. Not sure if he has more. They are 7.5” wide. I have located...

    Show us your arbor press!

Correct. I started electrolyzing just the head, then bought a 35 gal trash barrel. The casting is fine. The rack and pinion are thrashed. The pinion has one tooth gone, and the ones one either side are very thin. I am a feared there’s no coming back. Though the PO has another with a broken...
