    Welding Galvanized Steel

Oh now that's a small club! Sometimes I can't stand myself! LOL! TY @rdoty I do appreciate the sentiment. At 62 and 40+ years in a couple of industries the seeds of damage are set, all I (we) can do now is set up some defenses to slow the invading problems we know about and try to stop/retard...

Above 1200 Sq/FT The Salvage Garage

Again Strouty, not piling on, but a complete @$$hole taught me something I hadn't considered, as surprising as it was at the time. Graphically represented "Good Luck" is the intersection of opportunity and preparedness! Opportunity is constantly here or just around the corner, seeing it is the...

Crappy OEM electrical cords. Who hates them and what did you do?

I swap out the cords as their casings split, fray, etc. I just but a mid range cord [as I have damaged a few while still new(ish)] I open up the tool and replace like "OEM" black cords are getting harder to find here. Box stores carry very little on spools and pre-made are typically high-vis...

    Max Jax column bolt pattern.

Alan I concure that a heavy separate slab has many "pros" and few "cons". I however am not a fan of untreated steel in cement [4140/(2) for "B7" is a great alloy]! They just don't play well together! (Rust issues), I would look for some M22/7/8" M19/¾" "J-bolts" for your application, or at...

    Car dolly

Those sub-frame mounts are stout to be sure, but your stand dollies appears to have considerable leverage and the subframe had 6 mounting points mostly in shear/compression while driving, your dollies are torsional/compression. It would **** high to catch a wheel going out of the garage and...

    Welding Galvanized Steel

Well I just had a kidney removed from cancer [like 4 weeks ago] and sm being watched for the unidentified spots on my lungs, probably from playing fast and loose with safety, I am losing my hearing and I wear my hearing protectors lots but not enough appearantly. So take this with this history...

    Car dolly

@Blackbird what about mounting these to the toe panel mounts and add a bolt on "stabilizer: bar to the rear most sub-frame anchor points [around the front seat leading edge under the car]. Install to move unbolt for access? Just spitballin' to feed the imagination. Whst you built so far looks...

    Machining a metal instrument panel?

If you decide on a holesaw (old/worn) or trepaning tool re-sharpen for negative rake cutting edge to prevent/reduce the grabbiness at break through. Harry

In 50 years, will the next generation collect our old Battery powered tools and chargers?

Even the corded tools end up "NFG" I have 3 "vintage" Craftsman electric drill motors [early to mid '90's]. The medium and heavy duty ⅜" and the "D" handled ½" I LOVE these as the variable speed has a really smooth power curve allowing easy driving of screws, and break through while drilling...

Quincy QT-7.5 Compressor Blow By Questions

Seized ring(s)? Cylinder wash down and/or rusty bore trashed the rings. Bad valves will not vent from the crankcase. I don't know how centrifugal unloaders work so we will have to wait for someone more knowledgeable in that aspect to further our education. Harry

The skinny on compressors in 2024

When I bought mine I started going by the industrial compressor suppliers/service shops checking for something I could afford. I happened to luck out and found a not to old Ingersoll T30 5 HP that the supplier had rebuilt a month and a half earlier. Customer thought it was starting to wear out...

    Found my largest socket!

I know those as pinion sockets, they are built that way as the nuts are typically large across flats (AF) not normally involving massive torque to remove/install and have little clearance for a traditional socket. They are also a seldom used tool for many mechanics and are cheaper that way. Harry

Anyone use a rotary switch for multiple welders?

As for the problems I referred to is every connection will have a voltage drop, that will cause heat neither is good I know the resistance is pretty small but, they do add up. Those switches are more than OK for 1-2 HP, however a 225 tombstone or just about any 250ish Amp transformer machine...

Zerk Fitting Identification, Help Switching to Right Angle

Lots of size choices for zerks: M6-1.0 (metric application/foreignsuppliers) ¼-28 ⅛-27 ¼-18 are the 4 most common ones I've come across. Harry

Anyone use a rotary switch for multiple welders?

I see that the description states 63A @ 660V (3phase) that seems optimistic from my experience but anything is possible. I bought some barrier strips rated for 60A in the "Amazon" ad, but the piece is marked 20 A, and is a 3 place strip so the marketing team of the CH ina (China) company...

    Best Casement Windows?

I know nothing about this company or have I seen their product, but they are nearish to you and they used to advertise like crazy on the US local channels. [2, 4, 7, 20 , & 50] I live just across the river in Windsor, so I had a front row seat. https://www.majicwindow.com/ Just adding to the...

    Milton Purple air fitting hanger

At work I use the caps that come off of some of our cutters. They don't use that style container any more but, the big Box stores sell a variety of sizes (and some colour choices) for wire shelves used in the closet organization shelves dept. Princess Auto used to sell caps with a tether...

    Machining a metal instrument panel?

When I was a youngster I would have drilled close to the needed dia. with an ⅛ drill bit in the hand drill. Then I would have drilled multiple holes nearly touching other around the undersized dia. This next part as a kid with no tools was the hard part: that was cutting between those first few...

Novice question on aluminum diamond plate

Why? Add a crossmember under the feet/attachment points, those will carry the weight and you get the looks without the budget penalty of thicker material. Just a thought you could explore. Harry
