Is it possible to snap a bolt/fastener through using too much torque when breaking it

I have busted a few. Happens a lot on old exhaust systems but I recently had a couple of suspension arm mounting bolts give up. For some reason I call it "shearing" while if it breaks while installing I call it "torquing". Guess it depends on if it broke by stretching or twisting. Bruce

Nomination for "Worst Automotive Maintenance Feature Ever"

I want to open a booth at SEMA called "Punch a Factory Engineer in the Face". Bet I could charge $50 a swing and not even slow down for a few days. When changing the heater core on my ****** I take advantage of the fact that the entire interior is removed to do a nice power wash of the seats...

Fast wearing SO impact sockets or MAC impacts?

I found my old (1984) SO deep impact socket to be too worn to use just last night. Just felt loose so I compared it to a new one I bought at an estate sale last year. I had been living with the quirks of the old socket for a while. Nut would sometimes jam in the socket, but I was good at...

9th Annual Garage Journal Secret Santa (Official Thread)

Duker got me one of his wonderful cutting boards. Also received a nice Holley carb that will be either on a falcon or an 81 Mustang coupe! Also discovered that Uniballers gift was not sent along with a few others due to me being dumb when switching daily drivers...will get it out ASAP...

Who built their shop over extended time period

1972 when we built the shop. Initially for storage and a step up from changing oil in the dirt and keep the lawn stuff out of the carport (did not work like that!). I moved off and returned in 2000 to a full building surrounded by brush. Got it cleaned out and beat back the brush by 2002 and got...

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

I still have a problem with the definition of "vintage". I picked up this Craftsman with a 1970 date code because it was a nice usable box. The "New box" is a 1983 Snap-On stack! Even my "Old" boxes are still used as just tool boxes. I have a 1958/59 Craftsman stack and a 1954 Bonney stack...

The Derelict Ranch: The New Derelict Garage

By proclaiming the NO New Projects oath, you have entered the "Screaming Deal" part of your life. If you do any shopping for shop or home stuff, you will invariably notice an auction or estate sale that has a few items you need for that next project. If you are silly enough to actually appear...

What is it about this place that makes you want to buy tools?

I was once a happy little wrench turner with a lot of tools. Had my priorities that Snap-on was best, Craftsman was what everyone had and the rest were good enough to get the job done. Came here looking to find out about an old Craftsman box and found all this tool info. Learned all these tool...
