Black and decker weed eater finally died, what should I get next?

Choose your favorite battery platform and go with that. I've had the original Milwaukee string trimmer since 2017, still running strong. Two years ago I added one of the QuikLok with a string trimmer head as well as the articulating hedge trimmer head. Looking at the pole saw and bristle broom...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Built a small planter to hang from the deck railing for our kitchen herbs. Not perfect but I finally used up a 3-board section of cedar fence leftover from last year, and it's nice and easy to grab some herbs while making dinner.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Barely made it out to the garage today. Rained all day, spent most of it cleaning and organizing the basement. The shoe bracket for my ladder was delivered - went out to the garage just to check that. Looks like a good fit so I'll put that on tomorrow along with some new rope.

Anyone built a hitch load extender

I've bought many cattle panels with a 5'x8' trailer or full size truck bed. Just make them into an arc and tie down at both ends. The wind won't grab them too much. I do have a hitch bed extender for my truck for 16' boards. It was $59. I can't build one for that price.

What Tool Is The Bane of your existence? I'll go 1st

Channellock pliers. We have so many of them at work and they're junk. After being spoiled using Knipex or even Klein adjustable pliers for so long, it's just sad to have to use CL.

    Welding Helmet Recommendations

If I had a lot of money and welded for a living, I'd get a Lincoln 3350 helmet. But I don't, and I don't, so I use cheap auto helmets. I had a Harbor Freight helmet for years (black with blue flames) and it worked great until the headgear broke. Then I bought a KT Industries helmet from...

Hot water heater for the shop - exploring options

We use 120-volt point-of-use water heaters at work in bathroom or small break room additions when necessary, usually around 7-10 gallons. Plenty for washing your hands or washing some dishes. For a shower, you may want to go with a larger tank.

Are 4" Surface Boxes worth it?

Not worth it unless you just have money you need to get rid of. Box offsets are the easiest bend and takes about 15 seconds to make one with a hand bender. But this is GJ, so if your wallet is too full and you can't sit even, then go for it.

Are 4" Surface Boxes worth it?

I learned that lesson in my early 20s. Bought a couple handy boxes and slapped myself when I went to use them. Haven't bought one since.

Are 4" Surface Boxes worth it?

100% worth going with 4x4 boxes (even shallow) and raised covers. Handy boxes are a PITA. Give yourself room to work.

    FIRE *SAFETY* Remider *****

Every extinguisher company we've ever dealt with at work inverts the extinguishers and gives them a few taps with a rubber mallet. I can't imagine every single one of those companies is doing it wrong.

Is this cast fitting weldable easy ?

I've TIG brazed malleable iron fittings like that several times with success. Never tried to weld it, I don't think that would ever be the best solution, but I'm not a metallurgist.

    Collecting tools?

I agree that owning a lot of tools and only using some occasionally isn't really collecting. It's more about having the tools you need when you know you'll need them eventually. I know a few people that have tools and multimeters and what not that are still in the packaging from 3-4 years ago...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Not on me at the moment. I can take some when I remember.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Put up a 24"x48" piece of pegboard behind the drill press and organized all relevant drill accessories - hole saws, forstner bits, auger bits, drill press vise, extra V-belt, drill wire brushes, etc.

Separating metal working from other areas

I actually do most of my woodworking indoors (with dust collection) and almost all of my metalworking is done outdoors, except TIG welding.

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Changed the gear oil in the post hole digger. Starting the fence holes tomorrow.

OSB vs Metal vs Pallet Walls

Skip the pallets. Way too much work for it to still look like pallets. Go with plywood or OSB for the walls - either can be painted and you can hang things anywhere. Put metal on the ceiling if you want.

If mine ever does start acting up I'll be happy to buy a new one at their price.

    2026 Budget TIG machine

Still using my 2015 model. Had a few jobs that paid for the machine right away and I figured if I got 4-5 years out of it I'd be happy. Just used it this morning.
