    The VISES of Garage Journal

Vise in the shadows. What could it be? The body looks like a little wilton, but the base is very different. Paint is really good if it's an old wilton. Any ideas? There are two vises on this interesting shelving. Less to go on for the vise to the left. Thanks!

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Thanks Outlaw. I would have sworn the same. Saw it from the side and it is a 278. Also a pic measuring the jaws at 4".

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Hello I am looking at this vise but having trouble finding anything about it online. Seller has it listed as a Parker 278. From the topside pictures it looks more like a 273 to me. I sent the seller some questions but haven't heard back yet. Sometimes sellers do not want to answer...

Observations on the availability of Craftsman RHFT ratchets

GJ taught me of the mighty RHFT as well, and only earlier this year. I got really interested and posted a thread here about dating them. Seems they all had different patent information on them. That thread led to a RHFT Type study I co-wrote with DadsTools. You can use it to determine the...

    2020 Garage Sale Thread

Seems I am getting very luck with Vises lately. Will I end up with a Vise from every vintage USA manufacturer? So far that is how it's going. I picked up this Athol 624 in good condition for $50. It was up on FB Market for about a month. Started at $300, week later $200, week later $100...

A shame on the cracked slide. The only way I figure that can happen is if someone uses the slide as an anvil. I don't think it has any effect on the clamping strength of the vise so I think the best place the crack could happen.

    Show us your handplanes

Thanks for all the experienced advice. I don't think I am as strict/critical on plane condition right now as you are Jim. I think the difference is I am thinking as a user not a collector. I do like the strict/knowledgeable critique to get a good user quality price fair. The last one I...

    Craftsman Wrench History 1945-2011

Would be great to identify them. Maybe there is hope for the "B". I've read the ones without a code on the RP were likely made by different manufacturers sears was considering contracting with. Maybe at times of contract renewals or manufacture changes(ie MDF -> Easco). Give manufacturer...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Sounds like you will do good with a 4-4.5" width Jaw. Good old USA vises of that size typically range from 50-80lbs and meet your specs above. Here are some more brands I think most here will recommend. Wilton, Reed, Vintage Record, Prentiss, Parker, Morgan, Yost, Rock Island, Athol You can...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Just weighed these four and added the weights above. Possible scale is a couple pounds light based on seemingly official weights being a few pounds more on the two. I also weighed an Anvil marked "99" and the scale showed 97lbs.

Great spreadsheet. My first time to see it. Filled some boxes on my own spreadsheet of my vises. I have a Chas Parker 94 row 712. Spreadsheet should say anvil YES. Nice work!

Nice save on the old SK tool box. Will you paint it? The tool art is fun. I got my mom a scuba diver a long time ago.

    The VISES of Garage Journal

New addition to the vise family today and took some pics of four of them side by side. Maybe most interesting to me is the size difference between the old and new Wilton bullet. We've got two 4.5" jaws(Morgan and Rock Island) and two Wilton 4" jaws. Morgan 145 Rock Island 574 Wilton 9400 HD -...

    2020 Garage Sale Thread

2nd Sale of the day was a FB Market tool sale. Family was downsizing. Husband selling most of his tools. I don't think I was the first one there. I went for the Craftsman Toolbox. I have one that is rusted all over and the top is held on with screws; I was planning to restore, still might...

I hit two sales today. Both with their own good finds. The first was my first full family Estate Sale. My daughter (3yrs old last friday) has joined me on a couple but never my now 8 month old son :). This could be great fun as a family going forward. Day 2 of 2 for the estate sale so...

    Keystone Mfg. Co., Buffalo, N.Y.

I picked this set up at an estate sell a few months ago for a few bucks. Was pretty rusty when I found it. Have just got a light cleaning on it but looks a lot better! I hadn't identified them yet. Thanks lugz for the identity and reference to this thread!
