My small but growing DBE wrench collection

I agree Lugz. That's the most likely reason. Caught me by surprise when I was staging for photo. Then I thought....have I been missing something? I agree with this timing too. I'd place them around 1970. The bigger ones have the =V= code. I've seen at least three handle widths in the V...

My small but growing DBE wrench collection

Nice. Thanks. I do like having the key to the date codes. Always curious at least what decade something is from. Have you ever seen a magnetic box on a Craftsman DBE wrench? I have a -V- flat "A" DBE 7-9mm wrench that is magnetic. I haven't noticed any to be magnetic before. I don't think...

I cleaned mine up a bit but still don't see any trace of the dots. I do see some letters now on the opposite end :). Maybe "SW"?

My small but growing DBE wrench collection

LesserSon, You lost me there for a second. I believe a quick google search showed me the way. This is the only marking I see on the battery wrench. There could be one dot on the outside of the box end. Where are your date markings? I've been putting together my workshop the past two years...

My small but growing DBE wrench collection

I mostly just post tool buys on the garage sale forum. I know alot of people are on both threads. But then again, a lot probably are not and this was a heavily populated DBE find. As I often find with an old tool box, or old tool collection there is not so much a set of any brand. It's more...

    2020 Garage Sale Thread

Nice birds eye view. I had to look at it a minute to visualize everything from the ground. I've been through it all many times. Mainly just shopped outdoors. For some years I would go inside to the paintball store. VM68. The inside pizza wasn't great but ate there some too.

I haven't been to Columbus in recent years but I remember almost always going on Sunday. I recall Saturday being more new stuff and Sunday being more used/garage sale type stuff. What is Thursday labeled as? I tried to confirm what I remembered but the website doesn't say one day is for...

    2020 Garage Sale Thread

Last night someone posted these socket sets on FB Market. I happen to be the first responder it seems and made a deal for $40. When I met the seller today he said he got at least 50 other messages after we made the deal. Early bird gets the worm! Well in this case, not early AM just early...

I was invited back to another estate sale over give away. Does this happen to anyone else? Both times were FB Market postings where we had a messenger chat. This is where I bought the Disston and Atkins hand saws and Craftsman and Stanley hand planes. They must have had 4 estate sales...

Nice saves! Good to give new life to forgotten tools!! I bet that static jaw face is screwed in. I know some jaws have separate holes for the face and mounting (ie 4-6 holes total). If it does have more than two holes in the static jaw it doesn't answer what jaws with only two holes were...

    Columbian 10" Woodworking Vise Restore

Vise is mounted with it's two wooden jaw faces. For the jaw faces I know some prefer hard wood and some soft wood. hard wood lasts longer but is also more likely to damage what you are clamping. soft wood of course is the opposite; it gets damaged more easily but is unlikely to damage your...

    Columbian 10" Woodworking Vise Restore

I haven't ever found a Forney Brass wire wheel(amazon, ebay, ace hardware, home depot). Plenty of Forney brass wire brushes. There are unknown branded brass wheels on amazon/ebay but I think only coated with brass and have mixed reviews. I have a hand grinder but so far have just used wire...

    Columbian 10" Woodworking Vise Restore

I posted these comments in my first post: Harbor Freight drill wheels were really scratching up the surface of the slide rods. Dewalt(bench grinder) and Forney(drill) wire wheels removed rust and did not leave scratches. I haven't found good brass wire wheels. I do use brass brushes. But if...

LesserSon I applaud the completeness in your thoughts and reasoning. Newer woodworking vises do come with 4-6 holes in the static jaw. Those definitely mean to have wood attached to them. I wonder with these vintage ones if one wood face was soft enough......OR....if something like a...

10 bucks for any Green metal box full of SK tools deserves a USuck in my book! I picked up a similar Wilton Bullet last month with Jaws stamped 101157 WF1, and 101158, dated 1994. I have read the number on the static jaw is the model. The number on the dynamic jaw a part number. Also, the...

    The VISES of Garage Journal

Location is so important in pricing. Prices can easily differ 2x depending on location (ie 50 vs 100). I know a guy in NJ that fully restores vises and charges about the width of jaw; 3.5" jaw $350, 4" jaw $400(subtract up to $100 if no swivel). Reed is a strong brand and swivel vises are...

As we look and talk about this more I believe we agree the seam along the jaw face is factory and does continue around the side of the jaw face. However, the continuation of that seam at about 45 degrees downward is a crack. Agree? Good to have your terms defined in common terms :)

akasrick, thanks for the response and pictures. I haven't heard of jaw rot before. What is it exactly? Not pitting, Not user abuse? I also think the seam running along the bottom of the jaw face was probably covered up at the factory. Now the exposed seam seems to run about 3/4 across the...
