    The Machine Work Thread

I simply seated an appropriate sized center/transfer punch (held in the tail stock) into the pilot hole and rotated the face plate a few times all the way around to make sure it's nice and square before tightening it all down. Then I took a spring pass to scribe a circle to make sure it indeed...

Making progress on Harold Hall's tool grinding rest. Cutting a 30 deg ball seat in this 1/4" flat.

    The Machine Work Thread

I've started building Harold Hall's simple grinding rest. This is one of those projects that's been on my 'would love to make it some day' list for a long time. However, I have a hard time staying focused on bigger projects that require multiple parts and potentially many weekends making...

Today I made a ring out of stainless steel, the SS slug is in the background. It's really quite small, 2.5mm wide and 1.2mm thick which includes the convex contour on the outside.

    The Machine Work Thread

I needed a small form tool to make a convex shape on the inside of a hole so I started making a small boring bar and the insert. The boring bar is a 5/16" stock of 12L14 and the insert is a broken #1 HSS center drill shaped using a diamond bit in a Dremel. I think I'll face it off a bit...

Thanks for the tips on slotting, that's a good way to go. In the case of CNC the adaptive clearing works really well. I too have used WD40 with the mister/fogger. Lately, I've been doing as much dry cutting as possible similar to what I do on my lathe. Main reason why I'm switching to carbide...

Got any pics or details of your DIY cap?

Think I found a Honda screw on cap to use w/ Motive Pressure Bleeder

It's a screw on cap but from memory it only turns about 1/4th of a turn. Also, the oring has to sit on a shoulder inside the opening, there's no step in the first 1/4" or 3/8" So any update from OP on the cap yet?:lol_hitti

Nice projects there. They don't have to be exotic, just the ability to make parts yourself is satisfying alone. Heck, I didn't even make any parts and I'm pretty stoked about what I accomplished this afternoon i.e. finally learned the importance of using proper feeds and speeds and surprised...

Can anyone help with understanding a vehicle oscilloscope waveform?

Looks fine to me, just the 1 to 2 drop is not as exact/clear as shown in the diagram.

Worth it to build belt/disc sanders or buy?

Agreed, a better quality tool will produce better results given the same skill level. I find that in the discussions on the Internet the line between the avg DIYer and someone who wants to make parts for others (business) is often blurred. You just have to know which camp you're in when reading...

honda crankshaft bolt 1/2 air impact suggestios

I don't know if someone mentioned this already but most decent impacts should do the job provided you give it a lot of air volume i.e. a short 1/2" hose and 3/8 air fittings. I've only done a couple of Honda cranks and I'm in SoCal but managed to do it with a 10+yr old HF 1/2" impact gun and a...

Worth it to build belt/disc sanders or buy?

Hahaha..only on GJ we can have discussions where $2500 belt "grinders" (excuse me lol) are tossed around as what a home gamer should buy  Meanwhile there's a guy in flip flops in some third world country making most of the machines we buy using an old bicycle upside down as his only belt...

^ Pretty cool! it's always satisfying to see something come out as intended :) Didn't you also convert your RF30 to CNC? unless I'm thinking of someone else. I finally got around to cutting the full profile on the gear I started with.

    Kaz's Random Projects

Nice score! I hear you on the mechanics boxes vs. machinist boxes. Even for most of my mechanics tools I'd rather have lots of 3-4" deep drawers vs. fewer 5-8" inch plus that just waste space. Did you see the shop tour NYCCNC posted on Theo and Stefan's workshops? I thought their wall...
