The Vintage New Britain and Associated Thread!

Back in the early 1960's, I peddled my bicycle down to the local Western Auto store to make my first tool purchase: a Sparta ratchet and socket set. There was a yellow New Britain label on the outside of the case that would completely wear off after 50 years. This has been my "go to" socket...

    I need some decent jackstands.

You should go to a bricks and mortar store so you can see if they sit flat, are constructed with flimsy materials, or have shoddy looking welds. I have 4 ton Powerbuilt jack stands from O'Reilly to support my F-150 and Mustang....... no problems.

Anybody with a BendPak MD-6XP? Front Lift Arms?

Is there looseness in the pivot joints that allows this bending? Does the lift deck come back to horizontal when your vehicle is off the lift? How much weight are you lifting? Is there anyone else with this lift that can comment on this?

Alternative to large dust collection system

I have a Jet DC 1100M which pulls 1100 cfm (1 1/2 hp) compared to the 650 cfm (1 hp) unit you are considering. The foot print of both units is similar, however. I have my unit centrally located to my table saw, planer, and jointer. I have a 10' hose (4") with quick disconnect fittings that...

Anybody with a BendPak MD-6XP? Front Lift Arms?

This doesn't look good. Looking forward to seeing your update on this. In the meantime, I will delay my purchase of a MD_6XP.

Interior Wall Sheathing - Why Use Metal?

My wood shop was built with open stud walls. I attached 1/4" pressure treated plywood with screws from the floor up to the fire-blocking. It looks good, keeps things from rolling off the back of my work benches, and the fire-blocking provides a shelf that runs all around the shop. It is more...

    Truss Design

    >Medeek: This is one of the most interesting threads on GJ, imho. We were all using slide rules back when I went through Engineering school. I am intrigued by your avatar. What am I looking at - an aerial view of your house, a totem pole face, or just a cool looking design?

    Sharpening tiller

Earth moving equipment is often hard faced with an iron based chromium and tungsten alloy which forms an abrasion resistant surface containing a matrix of tungsten carbide particles. The Rockwell C of this surface can be in the mid sixties, so a file will not touch it and carbide burrs are...

how much can i save by Building my self

The last time I put up a building, I was the owner builder and did all the work that one person could do without the help of an extra pair of hands...painting, roofing, and inside trim. I had subs for the foundation and framing; and the county required a licensed electrician. I was able to be...

How portable is a portable lift?

A scissor lift, like the Cadet 6000, has small diameter wheels at one end and requires a tow handle to lift the other end to move across a floor that is relatively level. However, winching it up a ramp into a trailer would require dragging it up the ramp. The lift will bottom out at the top...

    Ironton Battery/Carbon pile Tester

Northern Tool has an Ironton battery/carbon pile tester currently on sale - see link below. I'm not familiar with the Ironton brand or this piece of equipment. This would be for my home shop to maintain the family fleet only. What can you guys advise? Is this a POS or a reasonable...

    Workable 3 car garage sizes??

I have a 24' x 24' garage (16' garage door) with room for two cars and all the usual household stuff most people store in their garage. Along the back wall of the garage is a 10' x 8' high opening in the back wall that is the entrance to my 20' x 44' shop. My shop consists of two rooms that...

Where/how does everyone store large power tools?

I keep my portable power tools in their cases on about 8' of the bottom shelf of one of my workbenches. My housekeeping is less than perfect, so there is often a layer of sawdust everywhere. The cases keep my tools clean. However, drills and drivers that get used the most often are kept in...

    Let's Talk About Ladders

I have a four decade old 5' wooden step ladder that is very light weight to move around the property. I've had to replace a step and some of the fasteners over the years, but it is my favorite when 5' is tall enough. Also have an 8' Werner fiberglass step ladder for taller jobs, but it is a...

Free Craftsman Radial Arm Saw - is it worth it?

I'm a woodworker with a fairly well equipped shop, but I don't have a radial arm saw. It sounds like you don't have room for it, and like me don't really need it. If you tried to sell it on Craig's list, I don't think you would find a home for it unless you listed it in the free section.

Vice in 1-car garage? Possible without a large table/bench?

There was a time in my life when my vise was mounted to a 12" x 18" piece of 1" thick plywood. With it sitting on the asphalt driveway and one foot on it, it was stable enough to drill, sand, or just about anything else. It makes my knees hurt now to think about this. Fortunately, that vise...

    Burying Downspouts

The best approach depends largely on your situation. Do you get a lot of debris in your downspouts? How well does the ground perk? Do you have rocky soil that is difficult to dig? How far do you need to transport the water so it doesn't cause you or your neighbor a problem? The last house...
