My Craftsman rant to their customer service

I am sure someone will chime in with a story about how they love their local Sears store but I would have told you to save yourself the trouble and start stocking up on other tool brands. Going into a Sears these days is a waste of time.

    HOA vs HOME MECHANIC

I'm a former member of a HOA Board of Directors and, lemme tell you, having that job is no picnic. Not only did I hear all the complaints about those of us on the Board, I heard all the complaints that neighbors submit about their own neighbors, and they are endless. Fact is, anytime you...

    Semi-Deep SnapOn Sockets?

I am also a hobby guy and I bought some new Snapon semi deeps and use them all the time. Yeah, they are expensive but you will have them forever. And, if you break one you can easily get a new one. Buy quality, forget all the folks that try to rationalize the cheap stuff. How many things do...

Sell Snap-On Classic 78 for twin HF US General 44"s, advice welcome

Keep the Snapon box. The first time you break a slide on the Harbor Freight box and you spend more time and money than it's worth trying to fix it you'll wish you had just kept the setup you had. The same guys that go on and on about Chinese tools are often the ones who also buy these...

    Snap on not warranty screwdrivers

Weird. I have some snapon drivers that same style which are probably at least 30 years old. They are worn smooth but they don't look nothing like that. Wonder why there is a difference. Yours look like they have gotten hot. Why is the shank on that stubby so dark?

Need help with Wilton Vise factory color from 1942

I have the same vise and my research indicated that these early vises were a shade of industrial light gray. In fact, mine originally had some of that color on it. I believe the progression of production vise colors for Wilton went from the light gray color I reference above to that dull...

    large anvil for sale

Whoa. Anvils sure aren't getting any cheaper. At this rate I will sell mine in a few years and retire.

    Toolbox Restoration?

In most cases a grungy toolbox performs its job just as well as a clean one. Unless the drawer slides are shot or it doesn't function, I'd leave it alone.

    Tool Collection and Cleaning...

If you don't have any experience restoring old stuff I wouldn't do much of anything. I cringe every time I see quality old stuff that someone has destroyed with "restoration". That being said, I would enjoy seeing some pictures. That would help with determining if what you have is unique or...

Snap-On lifetime warranty only with receipt?

I know many have heartburn over dealers requiring a receipt but I am ok with it. Keeps the tool traders from swapping out stuff they find on the road or in a ditch. I feel that's what did Craftsman in. But we have talked that topic to death.....

    Millermatic 211

I enjoy mine. I haven't welded anything thick yet but even on 120 volts it does a nice job. My dad has a cheapo mig welder and there's a big difference in weld quality. When it comes to welders, get a good one. Miller is a great company to buy from.

    Walker Turner 16" Bandsaw

Outstanding job. I know many guys like to paint their stuff bright colors but I think the machinery gray color just looks right.

    Trade in tools?

I have traded in old Snapon stuff with my Snapon dealer and he's always been pretty generous. But one time I took in a pile of craftsman ratchets just to see if I could get anything and he said, "no thanks....nobody wants these". I also had a 1/2 SK ratchet that he offered me $5 for. In my...

    Vintage Snapon box...value?

The date stamp and model should be on the back. You might have to look closely. Based on the pics it's worth $250-350 to me. While the old boxes are cool looking they aren't as good as the new stuff so take that into consideration.

    Von Dutch's Tool Box

Re: Von Dutch\'s Tool Box Wait a minute, that thing is not 7 feet long and doesn't have 4 outlet plugs. He must have just been a shade tree mechanic......

Look what I finally got my hands on...

Picked one of those up at a garage sale a couple months ago for $1. Amazing what you find when you are not looking for it. Interesting tool but it didn't stand out to me as anything too special so I sold it to someone who did find it really special :)

    Vise type poll

I have a swivel base on the vise I normally work with but I never swivel the thing. That being said, I guess I don't see much need for a swivel base. And those little bars attached to the swivels on most vises are a pain. If they tighten too closely to the body of the vise you sometimes have...

    flex head?

This is my experience as well. No a deal breaker but happens enough to be annoying and is something you would have thought the Snapon engineers would have caught during testing.
