Notice left at my shop from Xcel Energy

I hope you looked into a simple camera system, at least a single wifi uni pointed at the meter. Maybe get in the habit of looking every day every other day. Utility theft *****, because most of it is the user trying to get something for free, so the utility goes after the user. To me this sounds...

    Grounding EMT

I don't know anything else BUT to use the EMT as a ground conductor. Yeah you got to make sure to tighten ALL the connections. This means no beers at break time, watch what your doing. Not that hard really... AND if it was me (I'm weird) I would run BX with a ground through the wall instead of...

    Carpet or hardwood?

I would prefer hardwood every place but the bathroom. I plan on replacing the tile with hardwood in the kitchen, We have nice area rug on my woman's side of the bed, she seems to have issues walking on the hard floors in the morning. We also have a couple of small cheap area rugs for the dog...

Illegal Service Hook Up. Need Advice.

This is in IL, not sure where you're at, had a similar thing happen to a friend of mine I was helping...It seems you are able to tell it is an illegal hook up. I would call the power company report it. They may want to cut the power to the entire property, YES even the legal hooked up side of...

    Cable to remote tv, wirelessly

We are only a few miles out. I'm old and don't consider Woodstock a burb either, but I guess with growth and population shifts it is. I'm going to agree with others that there really isn't a good wireless way to do what you want. I use an HDMI slitter, for the TV's downstairs by the bar area.

    Cable to remote tv, wirelessly

ezridr, you posted "Chicago burbs" but your location is MI?...Please don't tell me MI is now considered a suburb of Chi !! Anyway, although we are close to Chi we have an amplified outdoor antenna. The picture is GREAT. Try this https://antennaweb.org/Address

Garage build dreams or pipe dreams?

I agree as someone that lives in "permit-to-blow-your-nose-area" I can attest you don't want to push a major structure that is visible. Most real contractors won't knowingly violate permits laws. I don't know the lay of the land there, but maybe you're just not asking the right contractors...

What is wrong with my garage door?

I once had a garage opener start acting real snaky on me...wouldn't let the door down all the way, opened and closed real shaky. The shaft and bearing on the chain drive sprocket was badly worn. I guess because when the opener was installed the springs never were adjusted right and wore out the...

Running CAT5 cable underground to detached garage.

I would run a second conduit, and another vote for fiber.

Shop wiring, inside walls and ceiling or surface mount in conduit?

+1 for surface mounted EMT, it will look much better than flexible, and will offer more protection. Not really that hard to bend, you get to buy more tools, and learn something.

    Bathroom ceiling light & fan

In our second bathroom the fan and light come on together, never really seen it as a big problem. I have seen OLD exhaust fans that where controlled by pull chain. Most (old) bathroom fans are nutone or braun (sp?) and have the same parts, I would take apart the old fan and see if parts from a...

help. trying to remove a broken off bolt in aluminum housing.

It's probably not a hardened screw, so IF IT WAS ME, I would use whatever clamps/fixtures I had get it firmly in place use a transfer punch and center punch the back side, then using a hand held drill CAREFULLY start w/ the smallest drill bit and keep going up until you can get an EZ out in if...

How would you re-enforce this door/lock?

Don't forget glass windows are easy access points, after that peeling back the siding. Hell, in Chicago new "stick built: houses are basically drywall w/ vinyl siding, a sharp razor knife, your in pretty quietly, if you can fit through the studs w/o too much fuss...
