also they put rebar in the footing, it was just all installed laying flat in the middle of the footing. i was wondering the same thing about vertical sticks of rebar sticking out of the footing and tied into the block. ive seen that before a lot. also they used some sort of galvanized (maybe...

Sounds good. I'm glad leaving the studs up wont hurt. I didnt have time to research and get quotes for icf. Also block is more cost effective and its what people have used here for decades. Around here its either block or poured. Yes I understand that icf would have killed 2 birds with 1 stone...

Well we made a lot of progress in the last 2 days. we had a ton of rain 3 days ago, so the footing guy had to remove the water and slop from the top before digging. once he get 1-2" below the slop the clay was rock solid. then came in the cement trucks and they let the 16" thick x 24" wide...

good input. The barrier is that the contractor is Amish, so hes not so aware of the newest techniques in foundation walls, aside from what he knows. Hes mostly doing pole barns and stick built garages. Ill ask around and see about pricing. thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the input. I brought up IPS walls in conversation twice but i got the general impression that-if i want icf- i would have to seek it out, buy it, and he would install it. my gut is to go with what the builder is comfortable with, but yes ,i see your point about killing 2 birds with 1...

excavation has begun... lots of dirt has been removed. about 200 yards... luckily we needed it for a landscaping project on the other side of the house. i spoke to the builder and he has suggested that we could possibly use Perlite for inside-the-block loose insulation instead of the 2" xps...

good question. by me in NE Ohio, you only see 2 foundations for outbuildings: block walls that are hollow and only filled in the stacks where they have anchor bolts for the top plate, and pole foundations. even with homes, you might see poured but most are block. with monolithic slabs... isnt...

I will have a 18" wide footing ,42" below grade (frost line), with hollow block wall on top of the footing. very similar to the below pic but obviously a 4" slab and not floor joists. also from that article: "Insulation is applied to houses with slab-on-grade foundations exactly as you would...

see 6.1. they suggest insulating a slab on grade block wall the same way you would insulate a wall if it was a house with a basement. https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/efficiency/housing/home-improvements/keeping-the-heat-in/basement-insulation/15639

any thoughts on where to put the insulation for keeping out the frost from under the building? based on my previous post, the below pic shows how canadians prevent air infiltration... but wouldnt this interfere with my siding as suggested by my builder, since the siding would cover up the bottom...

I have been vetoed once again by the wife. She liked your suggestion about big door on left- not because of functionality- but because itll be the same layout as our garage setup on the house :) . plus i can always park the trailer by the toys on the left.

Thanks for the comments guys. as for the garage doors, the lift will be 25' into the garage, and that bay will be used to store my trailer and truck. i wanted the larger door so backing in with the trailer would be easier. i wont be using the lift or trailer too often, so figured that bay would...

Building my 36x48 dream garage - need advice

after the wife and i dug into the blueprints and the layout upstairs, we decided on only putting up 2 false dormers facing the road for looks, and then 5 skylights, 8' OC on the other side facing the woods. most of the upstairs will be used for a gym and office, so we really only need light and...

just calculated the materials cost for the 2" xps foam along the outside of the block walls. ill need 21 8' wide sheets to cover 168' of perimeter block. thats about $700 for R10 pink board. question is, do i leave it at the 4' height (4x8 sheets) and just make it pop up above grade maybe a...
