Above 1200 Sq/FT Lost Cause Garage | 30x48 Rover Shop in Iowa

Neat, nice to see another one of us on here. We have mainly been in the Discover/LR3/LR4 era for the most part but have a few of the Series/Defenders we play with from time to time. My brother has a r2.8 sitting in a crate for his 88 2a. I think the balance of that just finally showed from...

Picked up the trusses. The boom lift showed up, huge help in setting the trusses. The trusses are constructed from 2x8s so I'm thinking lifting them into place by hand might have been tricky haha. After a few hours we had them all set in place, got a few purlins up and braces on the other...

This was a more interesting process than I thought it would be. Got the tops of the posts notched for trusses. Took a little figuring to get the best method to get a straight, square and clean cut. First try was with the circular saw, but was a little sketchy to operate at 18' in the air hanging...

The many positions of the site supervisor. But we knocked out a fair amount of lumber up. Essentially the outside walls are done with the exception of the corner braces. Garage door and header above that is all framed out with the LVLs up. Now just need to get a lift of some sort here...

Got the post brackets locked down yesterday, tipped one pole up to see how that was going to go. Went surprisingly well this morning, about 3 hours in we had all the poles up and plumbed out. I only screwed up once, forgot we had 4 longer poles and put a shorty up on the gable side. Here...

Thanks, it is a neat place to live on. Thanks, not too far from here. Have made many trips through there bringing Rovers back here. Haha, I guess that is a little Top Gear esque. That was a fun one to have for a bit. Budget Bentley, flew out and drove it from CT back to Iowa, great trip.

Started making up the pole brackets. I should have them all set in place tomorrow. Drilled and epoxied most of the anchors in today. Also picked up some of the lumber, still have quite a bit sitting at the lumber yard along with the trusses but this will get me started without having too...

40x60x14 cost for shell and cement?

In Northeast IA I should be at $32kish for just the empty shell and concrete for a 30x48x16 pole all DIY, with my rough digging before I decided to DIY I was looking at about double that for it to be put up without factoring the somewhat extensive excavation work.

    Let's See Your Garage Dog

Yes, she was around for all of my 20s, starting my businesses and all the massive changes that seem to happen early in adulthood. Time, place and a dog that I will cherish. Quite an interesting thing there isn't it? I tossed that together circa 2012. It was a 912E, purchased it as a roller. It...

    Bendpak Lift Noise

We had something similar on our Bendpak's, just more of a high pitch noise though. It ended up being the carriage chattering against the inside corners of the columns while lifting. Just lubed up the inside of the columns and they were quiet after that.

    Let's See Your Garage Dog

Had to put my best bud down earlier this year, she came to the shop/work with me everyday, that once in a lifetime dog. She and I had a good last 13 of her 15 years. Her sister is helping me build the new shop now, it is exhausting work.

I do enjoy the terrain for everything else, just not for the shop right at the moment haha. But the hills/trees/limestone bluffs of the drift less area is really cool, fortunate to have it. That lift table would be a cool thing to have. Chicago seems to be unconducive to people who like...

Got the pad roughly graded back to the height of the piers and laid out the actual post locations. Drew up the bottom plate of the post brackets to get those cut out on the plasma. Should have those back and welded together next week so I'll actually be able to start tossing some wood up. Ran...

Yes, the NE part of the state is quite different. This would be much easier in the more stereotypical part haha. Sounds like you are really missing Chicago.

Until I ran into the limestone bluff. I knew a couple of the holes in the back would run into it by the time I got 4 ft. below grade. So ended up having to rent a jackhammer to finish out 4 of the holes. That was probably the most physical work I have done in my life. Being I have some more free...

Above 1200 Sq/FT Lost Cause Garage | 30x48 Rover Shop in Iowa

I threw down some 3/4 minus to somewhat level the pad out, built up the one corner that was a little low and ran the compactor over it in 2-3" lifts to be safe. Going with concrete piers underneath the posts instead of embedding them in the ground. So laid out where to auger the holes with...

Best equipment to excavate foundation for a small garage

I used a backhoe on mine, TLB's are able to do a lot but are not the best at any of it. But in the case of doing it yourself and wanting one piece of equipment they work out nice as it can dig and move the material quicker than a blade on a mini. Just to give you a time comparison, that...

So I have a little Bobcat 753 that I use around the house to move snow, trees and what not. Also using it around the shop site for some light dirt work and moving rock. I've been wanting a track machine, mainly for want, but it would be nice to have with all the uneven/hilly terrain I have...

Yes, we are right along the Mississippi. Much different landscape than most of Iowa, we have some nice bluffs and hills. I trail run, so very fortunate for the terrain around here. I'll keep the Land Rovers updated in here as well, have a fun one going on now, chassis up build on a Defender with...
