Butcher Block/Bench Top where to source??

I went with a $80 Home Depot countertop with built in back splash. The Fromica is a nice hard surface and it cleans well. If I'm going to pound on something I will put a board down to keep from chewing up the top. Spud

    How to use Muratic Acid?

My new home has some cast concrete steps leading from the garage intot he house. The steps have 2 or 3 ugly stains on them. It appears someone spillled something liquid on them that stained the concrete. I tried power washing the stain (twice) but cannot remove it. The previous owner left a...

Should I be worried about heat build up?

My garage has a finished drywall ceiling. There are three fixtures with 100W bulbs in the generic ceramic light sockets n the ceiling. Each light fixture mounts to a metal electrical box wired to code. My trusses are made from 2 x 4's. My question is ... should I be worried about heat build up...

Is there anything that make the hum more pronounced? Voltage higher or lower than normal. Insufficient ground?

    What causes 60 cycle hum?

I just finished installing my Reznor 45,000 btu force air gas garage heater in the garage of my new (to me) home and it has a pretty pronounced '60 cycle hum' to it. The furnace in the home also does the exact same thing. I read somewhere that the hum is coming from the 24v supply. Can anyone...

My 20 year old Chinese MIG welder just died

Here's an update. I went out this AM and the unit now works. I think I over did it last night and got things overheated welding with a nearly continous duty cycle. Years ago I put a cooling fan on the side of the unit and that improved the duty cycle. I guess last night I overdid it. It will...

My 20 year old Chinese MIG welder just died

I've been using a Chinese (Harbor Freight?) MIG welder, an Astro Mig, Powermig 100, for about 20 years to do the occassional fab job around the house. Tonight, I think the trigger died. The unit is not gettting the signal to feed the wire. I took the gun apart and cleaned the contacts on the...

    Invisible Fence Installation

Does anybody have any experience installing an invisible dog fence. My new house has a receiver but no collar and a broken wire somewhere in the yard. I'm thinking of renting a 'trenching' machine and spool of 14 gauge wire and installing it myself. It all seems pretty straight forward. Can...

    What paint do I use?

My new garage has fresh drywall with typical textured / rough surface finish. a) Do I need to prime it before painting? b) Paint it with regular wall paint? c) Or paint it with the combination primer / paint in one step? Which would be best and why? Thanks, Spud

    Formica top for tool chest?

I've used formica covered counter tops for my workbench for 20 years. I couldn't be happier with how it's held up or how easy it is to clean.

    DIY Roof Rack

I built some cross bars to bolt to the roof rails on my wife's Ford Edge. I made them from some flat oval tubing. Everything fits great but the darn thing whistles and moans when I get up to highway speeds. I had to take them off. Darn. You pay Ford $200 for a roof rack and there are no cross...

    Sodium Lights?

Somebody local has 400 watt sodium lights for sale. They look like they are about 12" around with a fluted glass globe. Can I use these inside of my garage? Spud

    Septic lines

I just bought my first house with a septic field. The home is 20 years old. The inspector walked me through the septic inspection and declared everything up to code. My leach field lines are buried just 1 foot under the surface.

Sistering and attaching skids for a shed

Be sure to put it on blocks or piers. Mine shed sinks into the ground. I've had to rent heavy duty railroad jacks twice in 15 years to lift the whole shed and place new blocks under it. Try to avoid placing it in low or soft spots if possible.

    Did you ever wonder....?

Tonight I took a bicyle ride around the nieghborhood. While I rode I scoped out the garages. I found several that were virtually empty. The had a couple of cars, a snow shovel, a broom and 3 blank walls. Did you ever wonder what those guys do with thier spare time or how they ever fix...

    Does concrete sealer go bad?

I found a 5 gallon bucket of concrete sealer at the home I just bought. Age unknown. Does it 'keep' or should I toss it. I'm pouring new concrete this summer and will eventually need to seal it. Thanks, Spud

    Workbench top material.

I use a kitchen countertop from Home Depot. The built in backsplash keeps things from dropping off the back. The formica top holds up great and cleans up nice. I added a 2' x 2' piece of stainless to give me an area to pound on things or weld. It's great.
